I think there are a bunch of ways to work your way into an ER position. I know a bunch of people who went non traditional routes. One guy worked in IR at a water company and then did ER specializing in water utilities. Another guy worked for a smaller PE shop, got his CFA and then went into ER. Another guy went right from the MSF. All depends. If you get specialized industry experience and have the chops then you can break in.
I'd keep networking and have the MSF as a great back up. I think you can do it without it, but if you had a mediocre GPA or went to an unheard of school, then the MSF might be in order.
