Municipal Bond Research Help

Just wondering what kind of documents I should be looking at if I wanted to look into municipal bonds of certain states, cities, municipalities. I actually have no idea where to start with this, is it like corporate bonds and they have designated SEC filings? How transparent are municipalities with their budget and likewise with state-owned utilities? How transparent is the information overall and what are the names of some databases that are popular for munis?

No access to Bloomberg or CapIQ at the moment, but I'd assume this would make the task a lot easier.

edit: I just found that the Electroni Municipal Market Access site is a good place to start if anyone is in the same boat as me: http://emma.msrb.org/default.aspx

You can look at each individual bond document (Official Statement) through emma. You could also pull down the CAFR for the muni you are interested in and look under the section Long-Term Debt, this will give you an overview of their outstanding bonds and then you can pull down the respective OS's. edit: CAFRs can be found on the municipalities website or through emma. On emma they will be under 'Continuing Disclosure.'

The filings are all public and you should be able to find them on emma. Some other sites are http://www.tm3.com (may need a password or temp access) http://www.munios.com Let me know if you have any other questions.
This to all my hatin' folks seeing me getting guac right now..
