Name-dropping during interview?
Hi WSO,
Throw-away here --
Should I name drop in my first round interview? This is a person who is very high up in the co. and probably will be acquainted with those interviewing me. I spoke to him and he recommended I apply (though there was a section on the app that asked for referrals where I mentioned him already).
If yes, how should I string it in? During my "story"? I was thinking to say "XYZ recommended I apply." Is this too sleazy?
Some of my friends say that name-dropping can either help you or back-fire. Other opinions from WSO are highly valued!!
Thanks in advance.
You bring it up when you're asked "Why our bank?" Then you talk about how you spoke with whatever banker and how it really made a good impression on you that this person was willing to take time out of their schedule and help you, and how that reflects really positively on your views on your bank and influenced your desire to work there.
Feel free to also work in points about the banks strengths as well.
Generally, I would always name drop in interviews. You should, however, make sure that its within context and that the person whose name you're dropping knows you relatively well and likes you (would definitely recommend you for the position). Turned out one of my friends' dad used to be my interviewer's boss and that they go sailing twice a year... He had also worked with my former boss and so on... Don't throw names at them. Wait until the rapport is optimal and its within context. If you know that the person interviewing worked at say Goldman or whatever... + they usually tell you when they introduce themselves, just ask him if he had by any chance worked with John Smith. If he did, then the tone will be entirely different (note: this depends on what the interviewer is like and what sort of relationship he had with the person you are referring to).
If there is space in the work experience section of your online application (UK) then you might as well put the name and telephone number of your line manager on top. There is nothing like a referral from a big shot MD.
As stated above, name dropping, in context, is good. Don't force the issue and awkwardly name drop.
Mentioning names during interviews with HR.. do they usually contact those people? (Originally Posted: 10/30/2014)
I tried to network at a firm that has approximately 800 employees and spoke with 2 people but the conversation didn't go that well (not horrible but not great). I'm not sure whether they would put in a good or neutral word in for me if asked. During the initial phone screen, should I mentioned that I spoke to these people at the firm? I'm afraid that it could get me rejected if the HR person reaches out to them.
how many conversations did you have with these people and how long ago? It's likely that they won't even remember you.
