Native American Chief suggests widespread boycott of FedEx because they Sponsor the Washington Redskins

This whole thing seems kind of ridiculous. I'm kind of hoping that the whole native americans vs. NFL thing has been a super elaborate plan by UPS that's meant to culminate with a mass boycott of FedEx.

Also, I think people are giving the Redskins and the NFL way too much credit in terms of how much they affect our lives. The chief reminds everyone that the second leading cause of death among native Americans in their 20s is suicide, and then tries to connect the dots by claiming that such pervasive use of a racial slur is perpetuating the conditions that leads to these suicides. The chief seems to have forgotten that (other than the casino business) his people have absolutely nothing-- that is, they are poor, live on the shittiest slivers of land on the continent, and embrace a communist-like lifestyle that leaves most of them without any wealth or possessions of their own. But fuck it, I'm sure all of those things can be blamed on the Redskins also.

What do you guys think?

I'm not sure anyone's blaming the plight of Indians on the name of an NFL team (actually I'm sure there are a few people who do but in a nation of 300MM+ you'll get a few people who will say anything), I think most people just think it's offensive. And it probably is. We don't have the Philadelphia Dago's or the New York Negroes.

And regarding your comments about shitty slivers of land and doing nothing: I'm not someone who thinks people get to play the victim card to justify their shitty existence but we treated Indians really fucking poorly over the years. They have shitty slivers of land because we forced them onto those shitty slivers of land.

But I'm a die hard Eagles fan so anything to give the Skins and Snyder a harder time, I'm all for.

A lot of the problems you see with the Native American population, we see in Australia with our indigenous population. The common thread seems to be a few hundred years of being displaced by a dominant incoming culture, forced into marginal lands, going through massive cultural displacement etc does a lot of damage.

Could this have been avoided, given state of thinking over those centuries, cultural, global and historic forces etc? It could have been done better, but most likely the overall story would have been similar.

Being wiser people today, could we avoid shitty things that reinforce the sense of marginalisation among these groups, like changing the name of the Washington Redskins? Definitely.

I can't see why it's such an issue for people to want to keep the name the same, except to the extent it seems to be part of the mainstream's insecurity and their cultural backlash against anything which makes the historic American mainstream feel less secure in their dominance and control, like the backlash against things like gay marriage, feminism etc.

Just change the name, move on. It's ridiculous not to change the name. It's not like you're electing a Native American president and his coming to take your guns or anything like that.

Those who can, do. Those who can't, post threads about how to do it on WSO.

Agreed, the name has nothing to do with the conditions that Native Americans live in now but it is offensive to a large number of people therefore it should be changed.

The problem here is the name is far more "offensive" to a bunch of SJW white people than it is to Indians. For the most part the vast majority of offensive things are like this. White guilt.

I think you're probably right in some respects but the main problem is actually the fact the name is offensive to Native Americans. Saying the problem is that white people are offended more is borderline ridiculous.

This to all my hatin' folks seeing me getting guac right now..

Is the name offensive? Sure, however look at the orgins of the blow up of this issue. Have Native Americans been complaining about this for years? Yes, no one cared until the white people started to feign offense. Thus outrage is entirely white originated. No one cared until white people started accusing other white people of being horrible people. Nothing new here.

I am not saying this shouldn't change. What I am disgusted by is the social profiteers who have taken this and many other instances of outrage for their own profit. Like many things I would argue that most people who feign outrage don't really give a shit except to boost their own self image.

Part of the largest health crisis in the country today. Narcissism.

How about super Mario and it's offensive representation of Italian plumbers.

It's so funny. We intern the Japanese and had racist posters of them all over the place. Nuked them twice also. How much victim hood do you hear from them? None.

Chinese coolies were basically slaves. Forced them to build the railroad. Yeah, dominant economy now.

People need to stop complaining and just succeed in life.

Funny aside. Whenever an Indian tribe gets a casino they start kicking people out of the tribe. Less tribe members, more money split between the remaining people. Lesson? Everyone is a greedy fucker.

I wish Washington would keep the name and change the logo to a potatoes. Give the OCR crowd a middle finger. Remember how Washington changed from the bullets to the wizard? Equally pathetic.

Go Redskins!

How does this even relate to liberal versus conservative? How about just being a empathetic person and not purposefully offending a race of people that live in the same country as you. Would you be against ending slavery because it took white abolitionist to stand up and fight on behalf of slaves until the 13th amendment was passed?

Funny they didn't seem to have a problem with it earlier in the year. There's only one question to be asked here...how much money was involved in this manufactured "outrage"

Exactly.
