Need advice for equity research role!

Hey guys.

Been a while since I posted on this forum, but here goes nothing. So I'm currently an undergrad about to enter my final year at a strong target (think HYPS). I was initially double majoring in finance and mathematics but Im going to drop math because I performed horrendously this semester (as in, I failed the two math classes I was taking). So basically, my transcript is now littered with fails. Yeah, good times.

Anywho, I've been networking like a ninja for the past year to make up for my crap GPA, and I'm rather pleased with myself. I've worked in venture capital, a boutique M&A shop, and now helping a rising CEO with his business writing him an IM for investors and being promised equity (friend of a friend helped set it up for me).

So, my work experience is pretty solid (no big names there though). Just the other day, I was contacted by an old friend of mine to go for drinks. He works in IBD in one of the big banks (think GS, MS etc). So in a nutshell, he's been granted by the bank to start up his own fund within the umbrella of the bank. He's not allowed to have any clients (since thats considered advisory) but he can exploit a loophole of sorts and have 'shareholders' in the fund. Basically what that means is that I can choose to invest in his fund and become a shareholder at the same time, rather than a client.

Why say all this you ask? Well, he offered me not only to invest in his fund (and he stressed that he wasn't fishing for money, I don't even need to invest), but to work as his equity research analyst. He likes me a lot and believes I'm passionate about investing and finance, which I am but unfortunately my transcript doesn't reflect that (but not like he gives a shit lol).

The fund is small at the moment (less than 100k) but he claims this is somewhat of a "trial" that the bank is allowing him to perform. They told him if his returns are good over the year, then they themselves will invest in the fund and obviously it will grow in that manner. The guy's a beast and I trust his track record (I know for a fact he's one of the best performing analysts in the whole country. He said he can write me up a recommendation letter if he likes the work I'll do for him (he later said he's gonna write me one anyways but I don't want him lying if I do a shit job haha).

So after that long ass story (apologies), I need some questions answered because I'm kinda confused:

  1. If I join his fund as an analyst, can I put on my resume that I'm an equity analyst for "XYZ" fund under insert big bank name here? It's under the umbrella of the bank, but I would LOVE to have a big banks name on my CV. SO for example, "Equity research analyst at ABC fund, under Goldman Sachs". Is that ok?

  2. Is this an opportunity I should be frothing at the mouth for? I kinda am...

  3. What else can this opportunity provide for me?

Appreciate it guys, and looking forward to your thoughts.
