Need help from experienced bankers: boutique-Bulge
I am interning with a boutique that is very small and does not have any formal structure to their research. I have been tasked with putting a standardized framework around the research. For example, if we get a deal whoever is going to do the market research will automatically know these certain things have to be know and this is where they would find it.
Not sure if that explanation is too vague but if someone could offer up the structure or framework they use I would appreciate it.
Haha, that fucking blows. They're basically asking you to build a FactSet/Dealogic/Bloomberg type database on likely small private companies, which is a ballhair to dig up publically available info on. This a ridiculous assingment and your bosses are either broke or extremely cheap.
Do you have access to any of these databases? If not I'd look into if Businessweek or yahoo finance has any API's (codes that let you interact/transport data) to pull into excel and format accordingly in xls. More importantly, grab your staffer, build out a standarized framework (comparables by EV, industry, market share, etc.) w/ fake numbers and have him/her point you to some data sources that ya'll have access to.
This would be easier if you had access to like Hoovers, CapIQ or First Research. Do you have anything?
LOL! Either could be true Stringer. Not even considering the framework, it has been a bear trying to get good info on private companies. I have access to the sources listed below through my school. Unfortunately I do not have a staffer and am trying to set a framework to apply all the information I find in my list of sources. Does anyone out there have an actual framework that formalized banks use? I essentially have been summarizing IBIS reports to do industry outlooks/research.
Business Source Complete company reports Datamonitor company & industry reports Hoovers company & industry reports IBISWorld industry reports ReferenceUSA company & industry databases Corporate Affilations company directory Advertising Redbooks company directory Thomson One Banker company financials Morningstar mutual funds and stocks Value Line stocks
-figure out what your company universe is (ask someone)
-go to CapIQ or company websites to find business descriptions for those companies -look at thier news pages to see if there is any relevant transaction history/news -for private Co's you might find annual revenue if you are lucky but wont find any other financial info
also maybe you should ask whoever told you to do this what specific types of info they want
The only comparable thing I have seen to what you are doing is a comp set of financial data of companies in a particular sector that is updated every time earning are announced, however you will only be able to do this for publics.
