Need some help re: hedge fund internship cold emails
I'm a rising sophomore at a target school (HYPS) and I'm looking for an internship for next summer, preferably in a hedge fund. I have a couple of questions about networking/landing the internship that I'm unsure about.
-
Am I out of my mind to think about breaking into a HF right out of college? Is a couple of years on the buy side necessary?
-
When is the best time to email current employees, and to whom should I reach out? I get that emailing alumni is the way to go, but does it matter where on the totem pole they are?
-
Is this an appropriate template for a cold email?
Dear (first name),
My name is _ and I am a second-year student at (HYPS) interested in a career in finance, specifically at a hedge fund. I would appreciate the opportunity to learn more about your career path and your experience at _. Would it be possible to arrange a short phone call with you to discuss your background and how you got to where you are today?
Thank you in advance for your help.
Best,
_
- Assuming a positive response/phone call, when should I send my resume/ask about internship openings?
Thanks
Unless you have some serious contacts or a Phd in Maths or your a coding wizard. You won't get straight into a Hedge Fund
Ignore the moron above. You can definitely get a HF internship with a cold email. I managed to secure a 2 week one for January next year through a cold email (it's nothing earth-shattering, but I'm sure you can get something, which happens to be better than nothing). Email them whenever you want tbh.
Your template looks pretty decent, but I'd attach my resume with it as well. Just be like "I apologise if this is too forward, but I've attached my resume for your consideration."
PM me if you have any questions. Best of luck man.
F off mate
OP said ". Am I out of my mind to think about breaking into a HF right out of college? Is a couple of years on the buy side necessary?"
I was responding to his first question which If you actually read seems pretty reasonable and I don't see how I'm a moron for doing so?
Are you slow or something? You said don't bother unless "you've got a PhD in maths". So how is that you claiming it's reasonable? You've given him false information and meagerly attempted to tell him to not apply to hedge funds, which is VERY attainable.
And I'm not your mate, so GTFO of here, moron.
+1 SB for you. Sorry for the other guy's monkey shit. This is actually valuable advice - wish I had advice like this in undergrad.
Who cares man, it's just some clueless kid intent on shitting on someone else because he himself doesn't have the balls to go apply. Here's an SB back.
