Need some MSF advice

Hello everyone,

Need some advice so I am turning to this forum. I am an international student who went to a top 10 undergraduate business school (semi-target) and recently graduated in May. After graduation I came back to my home country and worked in the family business. But I have not enjoyed this experience at all and after discussion with my parents I have decided to pursue a MSF and also try and find a job in the States. I greatly enjoyed my college and internship experiences in the States

I want to go to a school where the student population is not too greatly skewed by the international students. And where the schools at least provide a modicum of help to the international students.

My profile:
3.25 (Finance and Econ major)
690 GMAT
Experience: Real estate finance experience at NYC and Management Consulting experience at Chicago
Also, about 8 months of full time experience at my family business working in corp. finance and planning.

My schools:
USC
UT
Vandy
Villanova
WUSTL
OSU
BC
Tulane

I want to work in corp. finance or equity-research. If anyone can evaluate my chances or name a few other schools it would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you for your help.

You should be able to find a lot of the statistics for admissions on these schools' websites. I know for a fact that WUSTL has it because I am aiming to apply there as well. I believe (might be wrong) their Corp Finance track is a 3.44 GPA Average and 695 GMAT Average? I visited them and most people in the program said it's more than just about your GPA and test scores (having high scores and GPA definitely helps) and they view your application as a whole. Then again, I'm just applying to these schools myself so maybe my perspective isn't as valuable. Good luck with the applications

You should be fairly competitive at all those schools, including WUSTL, assuming that you're applying to the corporate finance track and not to the quant track, which has higher standards as far as the numbers are concerned. Applying to business school, like others have mentioned, is somewhat of a holistic process, but MSF's are much more numbers oriented relative to high caliber MBA programs. Having solid internships/experience can and will help, but the experience really comes into play once you're in the program. It isn't nearly as relevant during the actual application process.

May I ask your nationality? Bringing a certain level of international diversity will be a plus, but if you're Chinese, on the other hand, it will probably work against you. The Chinese students in WUSTL's MSF program, for example, have amazing stats and there's a good amount of them. Other international students, those from Russia, Lebanon, India, South America, etc, were accepted with relatively weak stats (though your GPA would be near the low end, even as an international applying for the corpfin track).

Hope this helps.

I think your stats are fine and you'll be competitive at all of those schools. Do you need sponsorship? If so keep in mind that you want to be as open to as many opportunities as possible.

Other than that just make sure your essays are good and you can tell your story well. I think you are in great shape.
