Network before interview?

I have an interview next week. I got it through resume drop at my school. I really want this job. However, I have no contacts in the firm but there are a lot of alums working for the firm. I want to know if it's appropriate to network with an alum and try to know more about the culture of the firm right before my interview.

yup. i've done this plenty of times. got my resume flagged by doing this. tell them you saw the posting and wanted to learn more about your experiences/gain recruiting advice.

Thank you for your response.

Pardon my ignorance, by getting your resume flagged you mean getting your resume to stand out, not "red flagged" right?

Also, the two alums I am trying to reach out to are in the same coverage group that I applied to so they might be my interviewers. Do you think there can be a problem with this (would they look at my networking negatively)?

Not at all. In fact, it may help you stand out as the guy that was proactive in landing this job. As alums, they'd more often than not be more than happy to help out. They want to see more of their school blood in the group/firm.

This. One of the banks I have a superday, the alum at told me that I was the only student who reached out to him. He told me he made sure I had a first round by personally recommending my resume, and he also gave me a lot of help preparing for the superday.
