Networking with people far away and with nothing in common
So, I just got LinkedIn Premium and reached out to contacts from the 10 boutiques investment banks in my area. I'm in Florida so we're more know for Private Wealth Management. Well, I also applied to a lot of other banks, which aren't in Florida, and I've quickly realized that these guys are all in NYC, went to a school in North, and not very much in common aside that I want an internship with their firm.
Should I still reach out to them and ask them for help or will they be like why is a random kid from Florida doing messaging me? DELETE AND BLOCK!
I cold e-mailed a ton of ppl who I had nothing in common with... most of my e-mails went answered, but one MD in ECM who did agree to speak to me then got me 6 interviews with his team. So it's like winning a lottery, sent out as many cold emails as you can and be prepared to sound interesting if anyone agrees to talk to you.
Not everyone has great alumni networks. It really doesn't hurt to reach out... worst thing is they don't reply. Some people (even seniors) in the industry are actually extremely nice and wouldn't mind spending 20min talking to a newbie they don't know but who's interested in the industry.
