Networking with VP - should i ask for a freshman internship?
I've spoken to a VP at a bank and one thing he emphasized was how vital it is that I get any front office internship before I graduate.
As a freshman, should I ask if there's anything I can do over the summer at the firm? I don't mind working unpaid, I'm just wondering if I should or if he'll think the idea of a freshman doing any finance work is ridiculous.
Chances are you won't be doing any "finance work" anyways... you will probably just be printing, copying and downloading stuff for your bosses. Maybe getting some coffee too.
Doesn't hurt to ask if they have ever HAD freshman interns in the past, good way to break the ice.
doesn't hurt to ask. if anything, shows you're interested and excited to break in
you have nothing to lose, i interned at a boutique right after my freshman year and spent most of my time making buyers lists, pulling industry research reports for the analysts, and helping out an associate with comps lists and private equity networking / research.
towards the end of the internship, one of the MDs let me put together a presentation for a private equity firm that we were going to pitch to in a couple of weeks... i would push hard for the internship, and show them that you can do the basic simple tasks first (printing, filing, etc.) and then they will give you more interesting finance-related work
Are you kidding?? He will think you are a stud. Get the internship any way you can and lever into something bigger later on.
Scheduled a phone call with him next week. I don't mean to sound like a pussy but any suggestions on what might work best when bringing it up?
I didn't state a reason for call but rather mentioned I was hoping to speak with him soon. Should I bring it up as soon as the call starts?
