Networking - Would this Make me too Desperate?
Hi all,
I have been reading this blog for a while now. This is the first time I post anything as I have a sort of urgent networking question. Would really appreciate inputs from experienced monkeys!
Let me first give you a bit of background info. I studied at an American university, interned at a BB's trading floor (mostly sales desks) in London last summer, unfortunately didn't get full-time, graduated from college, returned to London a month ago to work for a consulting firm.
While I do enjoy my current job, I still love much more the trading floor.
I've been keeping in touch with my boss/mentor from last summer, although almost all conversation topics are non-job-hunting-related. I'm having a drink with him later this week to catch up.
So my question is: Should I explicitly tell him that I am still much interesting in the sales & trading and would love to go back if there's any opportunities? Or would that sound too desperate?
Any comments on how I should approach this situation?
I'd apprecaite tremendously any insights.
Thanks a lot in advance.
Are you f*kin kidding me? You're having drinks with your ex-boss next week, so there's your golden opportunity to let him know. By all means, be open, tell him how you feel & why that job was such a good fit. He may not be able to pull the trigger right away, but if he liked you, his opinion is the one that matters most. In addition, he might refer/introduce you to his buddies who are MD's at other shops. On top of that, he might want to help place you at a friendly account on the buy side - win/win for him.
Hi Red Barchetta,
Thanks for the quick and straightforward comment!
If I were in a job-hunting stage, I would totally what you said without thinking twice.
My concern here is that I just started to work at my current consulting firm a month ago.
So I was wondering if the current stage is too early...Will it make me seem someone who can't stay at my current position and need an escape? Or worse, make me seem like a loser? Hahahaha
Seriously, I'm no idea what's the common etiquette/business practice in this situation - which is why I'm asking.
Thanks again for your comment. Awaiting further ones! :D
You're drinking with your old boss? This is perfect! THEY CAN HELP YOU
At some point just say "I have a really good job but it's just not a trading floor and I'd love to be able to work there again."
And then keep partying.
