New job - should I be concerned?

Ok so I found a new job, which I'm pretty excited about. A consulting gig at a boutique which also involves international travel which is cool. Anyway, something the director said concerns me. He mentioned, several times by the way, that I am expected to contribute long hours in the office. That doesnt bother me but he said these long hours would not be part of my package (which is a little below what I expected anyway) and no overtime is offered.

He mentioned it several times and said he wants me to know before I commit and "get on board so there are no surprises". I'm assuming he is emphasizing this because people have left with the long hours and the mediocre compensation.

What do you guys think? I'm inclined to take it but should I be concerned that morale often becomes low that people leave and the hours I will be working will not be compensated beyond the basic package?

I gave a verbal commitment but would you suggest renegotiating the package? How would I do that?

Thanks!

sounds like they are going to run you into the ground...but honestly if this is your first job out of college, some experience is better than none most of the time.

You are also not in a great position to negotiate since there are also probably other candidates at this point that would be willing to work long hours for mediocre pay.

What is weird is that he says it wont be part of your "package"...are you working hourly or something and he is saying you wont be compensated for hours in the office? sounds a bit off...

I have no idea what your background is, and whether or not you've had luck getting offers. But based on what is out there right now, you may not have much of a choice.

Are you afraid of busting your ass for a year or two for peanuts? Bitch out and leave - you can be replaced by an able body who will.

Or you can use this as an advantage to stack up 2 years of experience, get a certification or two (if applicable/show initiative in your field), and bolt the fuck out for greener pastures for 2x the pay (as I did).

Bottom line, sack up and go through it (easy to say after doing it, I know, but you're not going to walk into gold in this economy).
