Newbie here, first resume review......go all out!!!

Hey guys,

Could you please review my resume?

It's very poor, I know, no experience, no internships so far.

Basically I've only been going to university and playing hockey for the past 3 years, it was a big hassle every week to combine the two but I managed to.

I'm going to apply to finance related internships between October 2012 - July 2013.

My resume is modeled after an american style resume, should I change it for the UK/France/Switzerland for example?

I'm sure it's badly done and that I'll have to make many changes. Don't be shy to point everything out!

thanks a lot guys.

Cheers

p.s. What should I put under [Job/internship description wanted]? Is it a good idea to put this?

Nooooo, don't put an objective/job wanted/description. That's outdated and obnoxious. You're a penultimate-year college student and you have -no- experience? Better get networking soon. Not even any leadership positions, organizations you've worked in, non-profits, student clubs, volunteer work? The first thing people are going to say when they look at your resume is, "Why the hell does this guy want to work in finance?" I hope you have a good story!

Currently: future neurologist, current psychotherapist Previously: investor relations (top consulting firm), M&A consulting (Big 4), M&A banking (MM)

I know, it's crazy, I have no experience. But I'm sure somebody will hire me for an internship. I heard that companies like ernst and young, deloitte, kpmg and pwc offer lots of internships and the fact that I'm not looking for a summer internship (the ones that are the most sought after) is a plus.

I agree with the OP to a certain extent. This is Europe and it's true that he's pretty niche for a lot of these big 4 firms' internship programs, particularly off-cycle. He'll stand out in a certain light with his semi-pro ice hocky experience. Although in order to be competitive for a BB you DO need something more. Is there any way you can get involved in finance-related clubs or do some research work for a professor on the side now? I have a friend who scored a BB internship without any relevant experience either, but she did have some extracurriculars (not to mention the super-target Masters program we were both in). In Europe you will have to fill out essays for motivational and competency questions as part of your application - For these questions, I strongly recommend that you play up your ice hockey experience as much as you can and draw parallels between that and finance in terms of level of discipline required as well as the ability to remain calm and perform under pressure

Your semi-pro hockey description, c'est un peu melodramatique, non? "Used to the public spotlight and to the pressure and scrutiny that comes with it"?!

Yes a bit, I do agree. I found it on some website where they mentioned that putting this would be good.

Should I just leave the first line then (the "managed to balance...." one)?

Sorry, to me your semi-pro hockey didn't justify your lack of experience

How so? I know it doesn't justify it but I'm just saying I've had my hands full for 3 years now. Now I've decided it's time to think about my professional career first and leave hockey aside.

Ok guys, how should I put that investing in my personal portfolio (a couple thousand bucks) and perhaps taking part in portfolio simulation games is experience on my resume? Or is that a bad idea?

I really need to get this done with, I have to start applying for off cycle internships, I'm looking to have one starting september/october 2012 so I've still got some time but still.
