Next Steps?

I recently started my first year (4 months ago) at a middle mkt IB role working in leveraged finance, focusing on high yield debt. Things are good and obvsiously crappy at the same time. The question I have is what are things to consider for next steps? I don't want to be working these types of hours for a long period of time and there is so much to look up in terms of HF or PE. What do you consider when determining if you want to go to HF or PE?

Also, when do you start looking and recruiting for these positions? The general standard is 2 years IB then move onto a more "normal" life right? I do hear that some superstar analysts can make the jump after 1 year. Is the starting position that you are able to get much different from straight out of college vs 1 year analyst background vs 2 year analyst background? I know this is an extremely broad question because there are plenty of options but I guess my question is more of where do I start looking? I still got a long way to go but I just want to know what to start reading up on.

Thanks for any ideas or suggestions.
