Northeastern University

Has anyone ever heard of Northeastern University in Boston. They have the co-op program where you work for six months and go to class six months. After graduating, you'll have 3 six month co-ops (paid internships) completed.

I am currently an undergrad there and I am on my 2nd internship. I think it's a pretty good program since you have to do the co-ops. I'm really trying to break out in IB for my 3rd co-op, I really want to work in the front office. What do you guys think?

NEU has a great internship program and career guidance according to a friend who went there, I guess they get ranked pretty highly in those areas as well. He said he felt really prepared for the work environment afterwards (he's doing great at his job now, too).

He didn't go into finance, but from what I hear about the school your best bet is to shoot at MM banks in the Boston area unless you have stellar grades and can find the network within your school that will get you to IB

Northeastern is a great school for middle market opportunities, but it has not done very well with bulge bracket recruiting. One fact is that they have a 1-year co-op program where you can work at great financial services firms in Boston such as State Street. The fact that they place so many students in solid careers is commendable, even though many do not end up on Wall Street immediately.

Couldn't agree more with the fact that NEU has good middle market opp.

My first co-op was at MFS Investment Management, a mutual fund company out of Boston. My second (and current co-op) is at Brown Brothers Harriman, a old private bank. Its better then no experience but its basically back office bullshit.

There aren't many opportunities for great IB jobs. I'm from NY and definitely want to work there for my 3rd job in Jan 2011. I guess the best way for me to go about this would be to network my way there? Send cold emails about the NEU program?

Also, do you guys think that being able to work for a full six months vs. just a 10 week summer gives me an advantage? What do you think the best route is to "create" so to speak a new IB co-op job at Northeastern?

I realize this is a bit of a bump, but whatever, I think I can help out. I'm a Northeastern senior myself, starting to look for jobs. What I've learned is that you NEED to network if you want a prayer of landing a front-office position or anything at a BB. Northeastern is a good school, but if you're just sending your resume in there are 79 better schools out there (per US News and World Report's most recent rankings). Hell, I've got a 3.8 and had a front-office, S&T co-op and there is still no chance a GS or MS will even look at me without a good word from a contact.

So work your ass off at your co-ops, try to meet anyone you can, never burn a bridge, ace all your classes, and hopefully someone will help you out eventually. It's entirely possible, and I know guys that have done it, but just know that you need to go above and beyond and then some. Remember, you're competing against Harvard and MIT, and that's just locally.

And don't spend too much time at Conor's and Our House ; )

I guess this is a little old but I'll add my two cents. I go to NU as well and totally agree with the other posts. I was lucky enough to land one of the FO co-ops at a BB. There aren't a lot though and they are obviously the most competitive so be ahead of the game when the fall co-op process starts. Get in good with the co-op coordinators because I feel like they some an influence on the employers decision. Join the student equity fund and be actively involved. It's on my resume and it's always brought up in my interviews and makes a great talking point. As with any interview, make sure you're well prepared because the BB IB interviews are much more technical than others. Although I know a couple kids who have gone the SA route instead of the third co-op, I would try NU IB co-ops first. You're competing only against NU students, and I've found that you're gonna get more quality work since co-ops are there year-round, rather than just the summer. Try networking with current or former co-ops at positions you are interested in - it goes farther than you would think.

Hope this gives you a little hope. Feel free to PM me with any questions.

I heard recently that 6 people were hired by GS and 6 by UBS. I will be attending Northeastern this fall and heard this statistic from a current student who has had 2 Co-ops with UBS. Morgan Stanley also is involved with the Co-op program and they hired 10-15 analyst per cycle during 2006-2008. Also if you do some snooping around on Linked in you'll find a number of people that have interned/currently working for UBS, CS, and MS. There are a couple of GS too. Also as couple of other people have said middle market firms are strong recruiters at Northeastern like MFS, State Street, Wellington and a couple more. These are great companies to work for and to build up your resume to eventually reach the BB's. Now to reach the BB's you need to Network and keep your GPA as high as possible (the current student I was talking about had above 3.9).
