NorthMarq Capital: Thoughts? Salary?

Hey,

I was wondering if anyone has any experience with NorthMarq Capital. I cannot find much in terms of culture, experience, comp, exit ops, etc for an analyst or associate there. They claim to be a REIB, but it looks more like a mortgage lender?

Any information that you guys might have would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

It isn't a mortgage lender, but I don't consider it a REIB either. It's more of a conglomerate. Really, the primary strength of Northmarq is its servicing and management business. It manages the Class A office space I'm sitting in right now and has a strong portfolio of contracts.

I have no idea as to the compensation, but he reputation is very strong in the upper MW (from Minneapolis to Chicago). It's owned by the Pohlad family (owns the Minnesota Twins) and is used in conjunction with United Properties (the principal RE investment arm).

But, as you noticed, they do make RE loans and advise on sales or purchases. That service line is a disciple of the old Marquette Financial Holdings, from which the Pohlads' made their money. It's the same as Marquette Capital, the well-known MM mezz fund.

Good rep. Intermediaries like HFF and the like... find debt and equity for deals.. not too sure if they are involved in selling buildings. Deal flow would be dependent on the team and area.

I would run a search on your city's biznow, or other RE sites that might have press releases, news, etc on deals they were recently involved in. Should give you a better idea of what this office focuses on and their current deal flow... probably would be good to know everything about the heads of office, because they are the ones running the show, so know their work history and the big deals they've been a part of.

Mostly reiterating what was said above. NorthMarq is a mortgage banking firm, i.e. they are brokers who help borrowers source capital. Like any brokerage, if you're working as an analyst your experience is going to be 100% dependent on your team.

Some NorthMarq teams kick ass and take names, some don't. On the whole, I think they're solid and enjoy dealing with them. Most likely, you'd be staffed in an office where you'd have a couple strong producers that you could learn a ton from, and a couple other guys who aren't as hot. Feel free to PM me if you want more info.

Thanks for the feedback. Do they not have the resources or relationships to fund larger transactions? It seems that they are frequently edged out by HFF and Eastdil in major markets. In brokerage, this shortcoming may manifest as less research/comps, dollars for marketing, etc. How does the same shortcoming play out on the debt/equity finance side?
