Not enough experience... But what are my options
I have been in contact with a recruiter for a large IB. I have been persistent about pursuing their analyst position. But they've recently told me that it would be difficult to land a position because I lack an IB internship. What are my options?
My degree is in mathematics from a liberal arts college. I have also taken business courses which include corporate finance, Macro- and Microeconomics, and two Accounting courses. I am 2 years out of school and less than a years worth of business analyst experience at a Fortune 500 company.
I am open to staying in Atlanta but California and DC are my other options.
The industry is getting smaller and smaller, making it harder to break into. I only see 2 ways to break in.
1) Take an unpaid off cycle internship at any shop and leverage that to get a full time offer elsewhere. 2) Continue with current job, go to B-School and apply as an associate.
I have been told that an associate can be described as a glorified analyst. (No disrespect to anyone reading.) But more specifically, in some cases, they oversee the analyses the analyst under them create.
Your best bet is going to be to keep working in your business analyst role, crush the GMAT, and then get into a top 20 MBA program, which will allow you to recruit for associate positions at top banks. IB has gotten so competitive that lateraling from unrelated industries is almost impossible these days.
Yeah, I've been told --- Lateraling. But I am hopeful if finding an entry level position with a training element added is not available, at least I will be able to leverage schooling.
don't have much advice on lateraling, just wanted to advise you to change your username and avatar so you're not so identifiable, I found you on linkedin immediately, and I'd hate for your current employer to find out you have one foot out the door...
