Coaching or being a pilot. I think both would be incredibly interesting.
Followed by Heliguide in BC for winter and then AK during March/April
used to teach surf lessons, I can attest it's the best job in the world, outside, get paid to surf, get in close proximity to athletic girls in bikinis, it's literally perfect.
I could never go to BC or AK, I'm too big of a pussy for that cold. I can deal with cold water (coldest ever surfed was 33), but I imagine those places are like the north pole. I've heard it's beautiful, but I'll pass.
I think we'd be good friends in the real world bro. But I'd say bartender where I could surf as much as possible. I don't know how fun it would be to splash around with a bunch of kooks in ankle slappers all day when there's a swell breaking on the outside. That may just be too much of a tease.
ah, there's a way around this, I only scheduled lessons at high tide. I grew up in delmarva and it was only good during low tide (except hurricanes, in which case no lessons), so I'd surf at low, teach at high, surf at low, and drink til sunrise. I got to surf PLENTY, one of the great things is the students want to watch you surf, so they would encourage me to catch waves as they were paddling out (if they were strong swimmers and didn't need supervision). I remember one lesson vividly: 50 year old tourist, wife got him a 3 hour lesson for his birthday, I must've caught 40 waves, and he caught a dozen, time of his life.
and thanks for your kind words, I feel like most men who grew up on the beach would have the same list.
It is good to know that there are quite a few surfers on this board. The great thing about SF is that Ocean Beach is so readily accessible. The waves are consistent plus water temperature is nice year around at 50 so a 4/3 wetsuit is all you ever need and no hood or gloves is necessary. Plus the view is surreal with the mountains in the background. A hearty meal at Cliff House after a surfing session is always a nice reward.
Ocean Beach/SF blows the Rockaway/NYC out of the water any given day.
lol i had a sup instructor once, i learned everything i needed to know in 5 minutes, what a rip
Looks like you got a little pain behind those eyes...
"TEAM UPALU... WINS IMMUNITY!!!"
Yes, I think Jeff Probst has THE best job in the world. Besides I'd never get bored of munching down on some premium grade snacks as I'm watching some starving people battle each other for a pillow. And I'd stir shit up at tribal council.
Boxing coach.
i might have dyslexia, because i read this title as "office blow job"
Ditto!
But i would most definitely choose being a ski/snowboard instructor out west. Have a buddy who works at Breck now and I envy his life more than anything, minus the pay.
Out Cold anyone?
It would so be worth it...

Hey Pig Pen, you ever been in one of them lesbian chat rooms?
As with everything, it is not that great. I worked instructing and coaching (to supplement competing) for quite a while. The days you get a decent level private hire or high level group on a bluebird pow morning are the stuff of dreams, but they happen rarely. Being a back country touring/ heli/ CAT guide however........ Now that's some shit to be envious of, guiding expert/ pros in the worlds best terrain and conditions.... perfection.
I hear Justin Bieber's helicopter pilot makes bank.
Definitely surf or SCUBA instructor. I have a friend who took 8 months off during his junior year to teach SCUBA in southeast Asia, was pretty rad for him. Surfing is great but there was a great white attack like 5 miles from my beach so I'm a bit scared of going surfing at the moment.
100% on surf or SCUBA instructor. I wouldn't worry about the shark in all honesty, we've had some pretty big ones around where we go and yeah there's the slim chance I could get eaten and die but I could also end up in car crash and die on the way...
I'll also add skydiving and snowboarding instructor to the dream job list
Yeah it was apparently a 7 foot great white shark so it was a juvenile, and I think it was a warning bite because it was only a surface wound on the guy. I guess somebody was fishing off the pier and hooked the great white, and was wrestling with it for 40 minutes (which is illegal here), and some swimmers swam over the line. There have been several 15+ foot great whites at beaches near me, but I'm in sort of a giant bay and the sharks don't usually make it in far enough to my local beach.
I love the ocean though. Seeing a shark in the water during SCUBA is a humbling experience, even though the biggest shark I've ever seen was only 7 or 8 feet.
What kind of jobs allow you to travel a lot and are attainable to a normal person?
Software engineer.
-Edit-
I'm honestly starting to realize that I would be a lot happier with the type of careers people mentioned here.
That's great man. In a similar situation and thinking about jumping ship. What are your plans?
Dream job - Jeremy Clarkson's job. Realistic dream job (although I have no idea how to go about landing it) - host on an exotic travel show.
Social media power apparently can help you a ton - YouTube channel on exotic travel locations plus Instagram to document trips; get enough followers or influence and you have strong traction. Read a recent BI article that reported on how a few "famous" Instagrammers got an all-expense-paid trip to Dubai due to their popularity on social media. Also, I could not agree more on having Jeremy Clarkson's job.
porn star
Drug dealer
Move to indo. Surf guide. $45k? live like a fucking king.
Professional Hockey or Soccer player. You could pay me 45k a year and I'd still do those!
Outside of that, if they were jobs that otherwise wouldn't pay at least 45k that I would do.... Auto Journalist
Read the title as 'Office Blow Jobs'
Probably either military or one of the intelligence agencies. Things like defense and foreign policy have always been interesting to me.
i'd want to coach mma/ grappling and train and develop a stable of fighters. this could still happen 20+ years from now or when i train long enough to actually become good/decent enough to coach haha
alternatively, i've always wanted to teach high school history for some reason, specifically European history
sorry goldie, just wanted to hijack the thread
@"Dingdong08" @"brandon st randy" and other surf guys check this out, some nutjobs went surfing in Norway's arctic circle:
Saw this yesterday, awesome stuff... This would have been handy http://www.surfsauna.net/photographs... and on that note, im out, surf looks decent today.
I grew up surfing in the northeast but that's just too much. I remember walking on the beach through snow to paddle out and actually dinging my board by hitting ice in the water but when you're more likely to get eaten by an orca rather than a shark, I think it may be time to wait for spring or fly south. Although those waves look awesome.
I lived in Boston for a while and hit New Hampshire, which for some reason has the best surf in New England even though it has something like 11 miles of coastline, once in February. Brutally miserable. Like I said, I grew up surfing New Jersey through the entire winter but NH wasn't even fun it was so cold. And you needed to wear a dry suit, and I don't know if you guys have ever done that, but it makes paddling in a 5/4 or 5/3 seem like you're wearing nothing.
coldest I've ever surfed was 33 on a day where we got 15 inches of snow Christmas Day. 4/3, 5mm booties & gloves, no hood (I'm bald too), I only lasted 15 minutes because my face went numb so I could hardly speak. I can't imagine surfing New England if it's worse. I have a colleague who surfs in Boston, and he says it's child's play compared to where he grew up (Nova Scotia), but either way, I have no desire to cross the Mason Dixon for surf, we get plenty of hurricane swell within a day's drive of me that I'm not missing anything.
Unreal, that's awesome. thanks for sharing
Few general issues w these dreamy careers (and I've seen some of these people when traveling): - Low pay - away from friends and family in some remote land. Hard to have a family life - it gets boring. You are teaching same thing to same noobs for what 30-40 yrs? - at some point you get old and what do you do with little retirement savings, etc. few others similar reasons and you get the point why most people don't just jump off and become a surf bum and instead just take the vacations for couple of weeks a year. I've seen a wide range from 70 yr old Italian hotel owner in some remote island to young guys guiding rafts in Zambezi and no one is all that pumped.
This is a Finance forum, it's the life we chose.
It's all so we can afford to have nice things, have our own place, and have leisure time. That is why many people enjoy work-life balance and not everyone goes to IB. Besides most people who aren't working in offices are complaining too because they cannot get a job or because they live with their parents. The grass is always greener on the other side.
Life is life, and perspectives will always adapt.
You'll have to start as a co pilot for a regional who makes about $20k/yr. Making it to mainline takes lot of time. I was actually talking to one of the regional co pilots seated next to me couple of days ago. Cargos pay lot better (and tough jobs to get, especially FedEx), but even tougher lifestyle.
Sooo… being an extreme sport instructor is the best job ever? I could see that. I'm only in college, but I have no clue what I would do if money were no object. My career goals depend on the fact that money matters… unfortunately.
nope. the point is getting paid for something you like to do in your free time and that's fun. I love golf, but it's not as relaxing as surfing and unlike golf, surfing is fun even if you're not great at it, rarely frustrating. many outdoor activities do not require high levels of skill to be enjoyable, which is why it'd be a dream job to get paid to do that stuff.
and you're not alone, 99% of the people on this forum's life aspirations depend on large amounts of money. nothing wrong with hard work, just don't forget to smell the roses along the way.
People's lives blow not because of work, but because they can't think of anything but work. Have some hobbies and enjoy you're free time.
Regretfully money is required to live in this world. Not sure how you're going to see the world while being flat broke. And while I am an advocate for not being married or breeding, most people choose to do both. When that happens you need to grow up and not think just of yourself.
Honestly, the level of immaturity expressed by some in this thread is shocking. Not surprisingly though. This is why you take whatever advice given on this site with a grain of salt.
Professional Poker player
Oh and as someone who knows friends who drive truck, it fucking blows. My one buddies dad's back is ruined from it and his son stopped going long haul after a couple years. You're never home, regulated to death and paid like shit. Plus you live in a chappy box and eat shit food. And you're not seeing shit but a highway. If driving on endless road is what you consider seeing the country then go for it.
Lol join the army and go SF. Yeah, piece of cake.
And I know plenty of military dudes. They all hate their life. You're working harder than a banker, risking your life and paid shit. Oh, soldiers are coming back with respiratory issues and having titanium and other metals found in their lungs from running around camp victory. I'm sure the VA will come to the rescue.
How did you reach 25 with this level of immaturity.
And SF aren't mystical unicorns. You can sign on with a SF contract and go to Ranger school. Wash out rate is high, but there are a lot of SF guys. Rangers, Force Recon Marines, Batallion Recon Marines (sort of, they're more about cameras and shit), SEALs, AF Pararescue, Green Berets, Delta, lots, the fucking CIA is legit as fuck SF capable
I think the best advice is just to stay away from Dan Bilzerian's Instagram page. No one's life will ever be like that...that's just reality.
Haha I bet I know more than you arguments. Good lord what has happened to this site.
Sorry kid, but saying you're going to just go army and SF is about the clownest thing you can say. And I have nobdoubt some love it. And some have to hate it as SF soldiers have record suicide levels.
But yeah, office jobs suck and being in the military is a paradise. I'll hit my buddies up with that gem hahah
Its not about the easy way out bud. Just something I have always wanted to do.
This thread reads like a poll asking 10 year old what they want to do when they grow up.
Ask any truck driver whose been doing it for awhile if they like it, haha. It's prob one of the worst jobs you can think of doing for all the obvious reasons. Almost any old truck driver will tell you I wish someone had urged me to goto college when I was younger, or I wish I was more motivated back then. It's an extremely depressing career.
Just because you see a few people that aren't exactly doing cartwheels on the way to work early morning does not mean office jobs are the end of the world. Most of these people probably like their jobs if you asked them. Not to mention they are most likely compensated well and have a decent life outside of work.
Funny how now all the sudden our "nothing in life matters" clown @roma is trying to join the army ... is that going to be before or after your stint in OTR trucking?
Nothing in life matters? INVESTMENT BANKING doesn't matter. Don't get it confused. I'm all for pursuing your goals, dreams, and ambitions. Don't get butt hurt because your existence make 0 difference in society.
Golden I just want you to know that I appreciate your effort in this thread and it's doing wonders for my Friday afternoon.
This website has improved a lot over the time I've been on it, but you can never get rid of the trolls whenever you have an online presence. Shit is comic gold though.
Truck driver making bank. Lmao. Go look at pay rates for JBHunt or Schneider. Per mile and it's restricted because of federal rules regarding time in the truck. Maybe make 50-60k all in if you kill yourself. Oh and in exchange for that princely sum you get to sleep in a truck trailer, eat garbage and never be home.
Oh yeah, you get to "see" America. Aka lot lizards and freeway Haha.
Holy Fuck school is out here. WSO daycare.
The kid was borderline retarded. He drove a Hummer and blew $200K on heroin in a year.
You are correct. Pay rates are low when you work for a large carrier. Now if you are an owner-operator and have a few contractors working for you, 6 figures is very attainable.
Speaking of which, I haven't seen the sequel. Should I?
I've heard mixed reviews, mostly bad.
Patrick needs to Institute a minimum age rule on this site. No more high school kids.
Yah, I know a guy who has his own rig and runs loads and shit. Still isn't making great money, not to mention how much it costs to get your own rig. And it's physically exhausting.
Imo, get a govt job. On the side build a business. That way you have a job where you can take time off with good security and eventually do your own thing. You'll have the money to travel and you'll have a steady paycheck.
I mean figure this. You have about a third of your year off when work for the govt. (weekends and vacay). Maybe more with a flex schedule. Tons of time to travel and start the side gig. And you can live a healthy life.
Oh, Enjoy having a CDL. You can't have a BAC half of what a non CDL holder have. Don't have a beer or two and drive home or you could lose your license.
And being an entrepreneur isn't a job. You need to do something. Have an idea, start a business. You don't just "do it". And get into the army first before you talk about special forces as if it's a cake walk.
I know a firefighter lol. Go be a state trooper, they can make 100k in a lot of states. Then again being a trooper and a firefighter means you can't chill in Baja.
Dude, op, forget banking and just chill. You'll realize that everything has negatives after a while. I'd suggest talking to your parents as you probably need some balanced adult life. You're not going to find much of it on this site.
I've stopped shaving, started leaving at 4, and am openly reading Vice articles all day. How am I still employed. I can't bring myself to quit, but I kind of hope I get fired. I'd rather just go back to being an optician for now. I made more than I do now anyway. My glasses sales skills are beast, son. I'll upsell the shit out of you.
Well hey there is a demand for truck drivers if you want it: http://online.wsj.com/articles/help-wanted-jobs-in-trucking-go-unfilled… There are some lines around compensation, lifestyle, etc.
For all the 21-24 year olds that think there is a better life out there, it's ok to think that way. It's called Quarter Life Crisis. Symptoms listed here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quarter-life_crisis
Gotta love a college kid talking big and bad. Enjoy truck driving dude. Jesus, you should be signing up for NTTS right now instead of posting on a finance forum.
My buddy is in Djibouti right now with the Navy. Making solid, tax free coin. Absolutely miserable. I can't get over the dillusional comments in this thread.
Love the argumentative mentality coming from those who have so much life experience. Why is it, that if your life is so grand, wonderful, and important you are sitting here provoking an argument with such stupid college kids? What kind of meaningful work do you have that so much time can be wasted on WSO?
client conference calls are very conducive to WSO
edit: plus, volume is down (therefore volatility is down) and we've already made most of the market moves we're going to make so things are slow in my neck of the woods
In your case, view my munificence as community service, a way of giving back, if you will.
Don't forget this thread and your previous thread were started along the lines of these conversations. You should be open to a wider, you might even say wiser perspective.
I am all for advice my man. 90% of the comments are nothing but elitist rants. Please, if you have something constructive and meaningful to say, i'd love to hear it.
Yeah I'm forgetting that since you have no actually real work experience you don't understand that things can get very slow. It will be tough to post on your phone once you start your long haul routes. Hopefully they have a good wifi signal at the truck stop.
its all about that 4g homie
This thread makes office jobs blow just a little less.
Travel writer (hop around and write for guide books or magazines) or ski instructor (in winter) and fly fishing guide (in summer).
I've been reading this as office blow jobs all day as well.
Very broad generalization of "office work"... buy-side work is pretty damn interesting
With that said, pornstar at Brazzers
For the record, I don't think finance is boring. I'm fascinated with the whole interconnected global economy thingie. It's just the actual day to day that I can't stand.
Check out that new TNT show "Satisfaction." It's about a finance guy (another show that lumps a bunch of actual functions together but it's not about Wall St) who gets disillusioned about his life and job in much the same way you seem to be describing your thoughts on the rat race and becomes a gigilo to wealthy women.
I think I'm gonna get back into trading. I had a good run there until my fucking job made me get permission for every trade and I bought a bunch of high div yielders. Why did I even tell them I had a brokerage account. I can trade currencies without permission...
I wouldn't do that brahhh. That sounds like a BORING ass desk job! It will completely get in the way of you "doing cool shit" and being a internet celebrity on tinder. You don't need to chase compensation, just keep living the Russian-American dream bro!
It is though, profitable trading is mundane, analytical, repetitious and boring as hell. Though at a certain point you appreciate boring. I've never understood the mythical/mystical aura newbies put around trading.
Ski instructor.
1.) Something on air, podcast, or sirius/xm like Rogan or Adam Carolla-- those guys always seem to have a blast without a lot of corporate nitpicky nonsense.
2.) Writing scripts; movies not tv.
3.) Developing some product I patent, like that super absorbent towel "made by the Germans" etc. that gets sold off after a couple years or has serious "As Seen on TV" revenue coming in.
I'm conflicted on this thread and don't have strong opinions either way. Ultimately everything comes down to trade-offs and what kind of discomfort you're most willing to live with, but I'm completely certain that there is nothing good about driving a truck.
Golden why are you even on WSO if your life is that exciting? Don't you have better things to do then be on an internet forum?
There is more to life then Tinder, sex, and having fun. Being content with your life doesn't have to mean you are having fun all the time.
