Official Super Bowl 50 thread

alright monkeys, it's that time again. being the south, I'm surrounded by Panthers fans, both legitimate and bandwagon, and after their showing yesterday, it's hard to deny their charm & talent.

To make this interesting, I want people to make some bold predictions (a la Trey Wingo), and finally a pick & score.

my predictions:

1. Cam Newton throws for 300 yards and 2 touchdowns, runs for another TD (not all of them have to be bold)

2. Thomas Davis plays with a broken arm, rebreaks it during a batted ball that would've changed the tide of the game, leaves the game in the 2nd half.

3. Peyton Manning has a hard time throwing into Carolina's receivers, but hits Sanders, Norwood, and Thomas for big gains at crucial times, throws for over 300 yards, but also throws 3 picks.

4. CJ Anderson and Ronnie Hillman are held to less than 100 yards combined, same goes for Stewart and Tolbert. Denver's linebackers are too good.

5. Ted Ginn Jr. makes a tremendous catch & run to put the game out of reach for Denver

6. Peyton sacked 3 times, Cam sacked twice, gets hurried a lot more than Peyton, but posterizes Miller & Ware numerous times. Twitter explodes.

and now non-game related:

7. Go Daddy shows a nipple on a commercial, but nearly no one catches it. internet goes crazy next day

8. Doritos once again has best commercials, none of them see another second of airtime after the game however

9. Jim Nantz makes an off color comment about Joe Buck's lack of talent and Al Michaels' lack of upper teeth, and nobody seems to mind.

10. Phil Simms accidentally curses on camera (calls a ref a bitch), is replaced by John Madden in the 3rd quarter.

final score: 27-13 Panthers. Cam wins MVP, doesn't make it to Disney World because he's too tall.

also, @AndyLouis" can we get a poll up on this?

Tough one for me to decide. I see Vegas is around Carolina -3.5/-4.

Both defensive units are great, although it looks like Thomas Davis will not play (at least effectively) in the super bowl. Denver's unit is playing out of their minds right now. Ware and Miller are getting incredible QB pressure.

While Cam is an incredible talent and far more dynamic than Manning as a game manager now, I still think Den has more weapons on offense. If I were Den I would consider using Von Miller or Marshall as a dedicated spy on Newton the entire game.

I am leaning toward rolling with Denver plus the points. I can see Manning game managing Denver to a low scoring win.

First off, great thread idea. I think it should be a interesting game because while Peyton hasn't been turning the ball over, Carolina has been unstoppable in that aspect with Luke. I see either one of two things happen: Cam and Panthers dominate like they did yesterday or fizzle out of momentum and lose a 17-14 game to Denver. I don't believe denver deserves to win given the inconsistency they have had and how lucky they have been considering the play of their quarterbacks. I mean how fortunate were they that gostkowski missed a extra point for the first time in over 8 years?!?!?! Could be destiny but we also thought that 2 years ago when seattle put the smackdown and bullied the highest scoring offense of all time to only 8 points. I got the Panthers winning big: 35-16.

Panthers just seem on another level. Heck if it was Arizona vs. Denver, I'd still think Arizona would win handily.

I'm hoping the conference games get so dissected and that the odds are so much in Carolina's favor that it actually becomes worth it to bet on Denver. I'd much rather bet on Denver when they have a 10% chance of winning than if they have a 30% chance just for the payout.

Carolina has so much talent though it's disgusting. They've played head and shoulders above any other team this season.

that last comment is where you lost me. Carolina has a high powered offense, sure. but you can't expect me to believe they're invincible after blowing huge leads and nearly losing to seattle, new york, and green bay. I still think they'll win, but they need to play like they did yesterday, not like they did against any other team if they're going to roll over Denver.

but yes, from a betting perspective if Carolina's favored by double digits, Denver would be a good bet.

That inability of holding on to huge leads probably comes from the inexperience in getting huge leads in the first place. I think this was a massive season for the franchise in terms of learning about how to play like a champion, which includes playing 4 full quarters. I have no doubt that Carolina learned their lesson after Seattle and that's why we saw them polish off a much better Arizona team.

I wouldn't count on Carolina going up by 30 points in the first half only to blow it all on the offensively limping Denver team.

Gotta say it's been a fun year living in the Carolinas, between the UNC and Clemson ACC dominance, Clemson's title run, and now the Panthers. I think Peyton comes up short in a close one (Broncos defense IS good, after all) and Cam and my boy Keuchly both get rings.

Well now it's worth saying it's been a cursed year living down here. I lost 3 fantasy football championship games, Clemson lost the national championship, and now the Panthers lost the Super Bowl.

Anyhow, I called Peyton playing like shit and the Broncos defense carrying them, but I definitely didn't count on Cam not even showing up.

The Panthers are just disgustingly good. Denver doesn't have the offense needed to really punch through the Carolina defense in big enough ways to win it. I think they'll be limited to one touchdown and 2-3 field goals.

The Panthers aren't going to be able to put up the big offensive numbers they did against the Seahawks and Cardinals, and will be limited to 2 field goals, a jumping touchdown by Cam from the 1, and another receiving touchdown.

Carolina wins 19-16

Von Miller pounded Brady to the point where I kind of felt sorry for him towards the end of the game. That seems immensely less likely against Newton. The Panthers looked ridiculous yesterday. I think they win by 14.

Honestly, all I'm rooting for is a close game so I have a socially acceptable excuse to get shitfaced.

You sound like a freshman in highschool. "Beta" QB...wtf

The guy is at the tail end of his career and no longer has the arm strength. Cam is having an MVP year, but let's not forget this is the 1st season he has been able to finally put it all together and reach his #1 overall pick potential.

I think alot of the over-hyping new Carolina/Cam fanboys may be surprised on Super Bowl Sunday. Manning is now a game manager, but possibly the best in the league of those QBs. This Denver defense is the best Manning's had in his career. When Carolina's offense goes on a cold streak they can look brutal.

I'm completely unbiased being an Eagles fan, this is just my opinion.

If the Broncos win. Everyone in this thread MonkeyShit me. I'm willing to put my money where my mouth is for the Panthers to pull it off.

I think it's too hard to predict games like this. Everyone and their mother had the Patriots beating the Broncos this past weekend. Everyone thought that Seahawks would lose to Broncos two Superbowls ago. Damn, The Giants upset the Patriots twice (mmmmm that was nice). The next two weeks will be endless media vomit about which team will win and why.

All I want is a close game and to win a few bucks in the box pool.

couple of things here:

peyton doesn't need money, he has a near monopoly on pizza in a state where pot is legalized, not to mention the 9 figures he's earned in salary and endorsements over the years

rocket arm means shit. what I think is peyton's issue is velocity when it's required. if a slant, buttonhook, or other quick route doesn't have zip on it, it leaves more time for LBs to get eyes on it. throwing the ball hard on every throw is not necessary, but I think peyton's nerve damage has hindered his ability to throw a quick spiral on routes where it's necessary.

hot teams don't always win.

people are going to hate on peyton because he's not as cool as Cam and completely write him off in this game, but he will end up being remembered as one of the all time greats. peyton has a ring, has been to multiple super bowls (both of which Cam does NOT have), and while he did have marvin harrison for all of those years in indy and then reggie wayne, he didnt have much else. no one on here is talking shit about brett favre or dan marino, and maybe that's because you're too young, but just because a 39 year old is playing like a 39 year old doesn't mean he should be disrespected. let's not forget he had one of the best QB seasons in NFL history just 2 short years ago, before unfortunately getting dominated by seattle.

yes, I'm picking the panthers, and yes I believe peyton's best years are behind him, but you cannot deny his greatness. he was never known for a rocket arm like elway or favre, but he will be in the conversation for best QB of all time. Cam has only had 2 seasons above .500 his entire career and people are making him out to be God. yes, he's having a good start to his career, and yes he's matured as a pocket passer, but don't get carried away, as he's got a lot more years ahead of him to possibly fuck it up. I'd like to point out who else has had one GREAT year: rex grossman, RG3, rich gannon, trent dilfer, and brad johnson. I think Cam is the real deal, but a strong season after going 7-8-1 shouldn't be reason enough to scrape your knees trying to blow this guy.

Yeah no doubt. He is one of the best ever but all I'm saying is he doesn't throw a very tight spiral anymore like brady or rodgers. Add the fact he doesn't really have much velocity on even 25 yard throws and he can have tough time throwing in windy conditions where a qb needs to have somewhat of a fastball for going into the wind. Undoubtedly he had some great receivers: harrison, wayne, thomas, etc. but that doesn't take away the fact he averaged for his career over 30tds and 4200-4600 passing yards. The only knock on him is that he doesn't have a dominant playoff record like brady or montana did but that can be way overrated too. Some people put Montana ahead of brady ONLY because of his stats in 4 championship games. They omit the fact that Brady has been to 2 more superbowls, TEN AFC championships, most division titles in history, most playoff wins, most playoff and superbowl yds-tds-completions, most playoff wins (he has 22 while joe has 16), most playoff games started (hard to do when you're not a kicker), highest regular season winning percentage, I could keep going but you get the point. He has been Mr. Consistent in a salary-cap era for a long time but people discredit him and have hated him for the past 10-12 yrs because of he wins so much and things didn't do (spygate, deflategate). i think it's funny how they have been to 5 straight AFC championship games but haven't been given coach of the year, mvp, gm of year, etc. in any of those years. No doubt Cam hasn't proved as much as peyton but people get a herd mentality towards the mvp.

I think the refs will make a very controversial call in regards to no one in stripes knowing what a catch is on a big play that will be talked about until the next season.

Unfortunately I think this will be the case. Either a botched call on a catch, a non call when a d back is molesting a Carolina receiver or a weak def PI call that goes Manning's way, or some flub on the guys in stripes. I don't have the time to watch too many full games when it's not my team playing but the few I've watched this year when I had no skin in the game-didn't care who won, no money on it, had no effect on my team, etc-so I had no bias one way or the other, it was amazing to see how bad officiating has become and how bad the actual game has become because of it. You see one pass olay that gets a 40 yard PI call when the DB barely grazed the receiver and the next series a guy is tackling the receiver and doesn't get the call. Random enforcement of helmet to helmet contact, roughing the passer, and other penalties just make the game look stupid. I feel like anytime there's a big play on either side of the ball you can't get too excited because there's a high probability that it'll be reversed because of a weak penalty call.

It's even worse from my standpoint. I'm from Detroit so I root for this Lions (I drink a lot of alcohol) which seems to have a terrible call go against them just about every single game.... on top of all of their own self destruction. The only time it was ever somewhat vindicated was when we got knocked out of the playoffs off a botched catch/no catch call and then the team that beat us lost in the same way the next game.

It can be worse, I shelled out $2800 for a shitty seat at Meadowlands to see that disaster first hand.

Carolina hangs up ~400 yd's of total offense on this #1 ranked Broncos D? Bro, you're way off base, the stats from 2015 just don't support your prediction.

Broncos Defense has allowed fewest points / game (18.5; 20.3 against top-10 defense's) and total yards / game (283) during the 2015 season. The Panthers have scored on average 31 points / game and will need to force a performance out of the Broncos defense that busts their statistical average's. Given the fact the Panther's weren't even a top-10 team in total yards forwarded throughout the season, I find this difficult to see happen.

Broncos will jam Panther's receivers at scrimmage (see AFC Championship vs. Patriots) and deep secondary coverage has been lights out this season against the deep threat. However, I will admit that the Broncos D didn't face a highly mobile QB threat like Cam so far, so how they'll handle that third offensive variable coming from a mobile QB...we'll have to see.

Denver Broncos 26, Carolina Panthers 21

Fair enough, but I thought Broncos have allowed over 300 yards multiple times and over 200 yards passing against the Browns, AJ mccarron, Chiefs, Patriots, steelers, and more. Of note, when they lost to Pittsburgh Big Ben threw for 380.

Saying they allow 400 yards isn't that big of a stretch in a one game situation, especially in the super bowl. If Alex smith can put up 250, cam can do 300.

All that said, thank you for the thoughtful reply, I was hoping for this kinda banter

Panthers win by 21- Cam throws for 350-3 td's(1- running). Luke Kuechly, Kawann Short and Star Lotulelei destroy Peyton and the drop-prone Broncos.

good for the broncos for winning, but I have to say they got lucky and had their ass saved by the defense. Manning looked like a shadow of his former self out there (missed passes, holding on too long, being sacked...). I really hope he retires with a brand new ring in his finger or he will begin falling apart in the field.
