How do you network successfully? Most will answer by walking up to someone whom they have never spoken to before and asking for their name, job description, and future plans. However, there comes the dreaded moment when the conversation is no longer interesting, and there are so many other people you could be talking to.
I was recently at an alumni mingle where one gentleman was explaining his job in private equity to a group of us, but the conversation became too dry and none of us in a group of 5 felt that it would be right to leave. What would you do to politely excuse yourself and continue talking to other people?

It's a giant event, there are no expectations to talk to everyone. Don't be an asshole but I don't expect someone to talk to me the entire time.
