Goldman Sachs Finance (Controllers) Interview Advice
Hey, I will be having an on-campus interview with GS for an internship in the Finance (Controllers) Division for this upcoming summer. I was wondering what I should expect from this first interview, with regards to questions: technical or behavioral? Also, could you share what specific types of questions I should prepare for with this interview coming up.
P.S. This is my first legitimate interview as well, so I'm pretty nervous, so any suggestions will help!
I interviewed for their full time recently. The interviews aren't bad at all. I had a phone interview & then a superday. The phone interview went really well that it ended in less than 20 mins. The guy asked me why Goldmans, tell me about a recent event that's sparking your interest, what makes a culture inclusive. For the superday: it was 2-30 minute back to back interviews. Once again it really had the same feel as the phone interview, really behavioral and I didn't get one technical question. Go over your resume, why Goldman, recent event in the markets, and what is Product Control. I personally would suggest that you show interest in the markets as Controllers is really focused around that. I would also suggest studying a bit on basic accounting, like the 3 financial statements, as it's better to be over prepared imo. Hope that helps.
Definitely know your resume. Know the Finance division and how the teams are divided. You won't have as much to say about what team would you be in, but definitely know accounting and fiance concepts. Have a clear understanding of market trends and how the firm is standing to other banks. Finally, know the stock price and any major economic news (EMEA, BRIC's and the Americas). Good luck!

Hi Guys,
I'm currently in my penultimate year at a top European university with an interview coming up soon for GS Controllers: I was wondering if anyone here works within the group and could provide me with some context on the arena (I've digested all the information on the website and was just looking for some first hand experience)
Thanks chaps!

"On Hold" at Goldman Sachs (Finance-Controllers) (Originally Posted: 03/19/2014)
Had first round OCR in early December and placed on hold shortly after, specifically for a SA position within the Finance - Controllers division. Contacted hr representative that was present at OCR in mid feb, she said can expect an update by late Feb/ early March and asked about any current offers I have. She said any update I would recieve would be regarding a final around super day. Its mid March and I have not received any updates. Anyone else in a similar position or have any experience being placed on hold? I reached out to my contact within the group and he said all I can do is just sit tight and wait. Would notifying them about other offers give me leverage? Any information regarding the recruiting process would be helpful. Thank you
Had somewhat of a similar situation...had a superday, told me to update them with offers. Updated them with my offer, told me I was on hold and they would get back to me before the deadline. Contacted them multiple times to see what my status was and finally got an email hours before my deadline saying "We are still unsure, cant give you a definite answer yet".
Ended up accepting the offer I had and heard back about a month and a half later saying I didn't get the position.
Best of luck man.
General rule is that "on hold" is a dead end. But there are always exceptions to the rule. Good luck.
You're basically waiting on someone else to reneg/decline an offer, so its pretty much a ding. I'd look into other options at this point.
If they didn't say yes, they said no.

How long did it take to hear back from the company after the phone interview? Did you reach out to anyone?
Hey, I personal messaged you!
Hi Conor- I also interviewed with Controllers position with Goldman Sachs. Can you send me the message as well? I have the same question with pursuingHappiness. Thank you guys!
Hi guys,
Are you guys talking about the FT position? Because I interviewed for that as well in NJ HQs. One other guy who interviewed told me that he was already denied. I looked up my status on GSs' website and it says I got an offer. I'm extremely confused as to what's going on since they told me it'd be a week for an update.
When did you have your phone interview?
Double post. Sorry.
Bump on this for 2015?
Opinions on Goldman Sachs Financial Reporting Controller (Originally Posted: 09/18/2013)
Hey folks,
Anyone have any opinion on the Financial Reporting Controller - Associate position with Goldman Sachs? Its based in New York. I just got an email to set up an interview, anyone go through the process?
This is experienced by the way, the description said minimum 3 years experience. The job description seems like a standard corporate finance position, with budgeting, forecasting, P&Ls, ad-hoc reports, etc. Any opinions?
What's your background, current role, would you make more $ at GS, where do you live now? Need more info to provide opinions, however, Goldman is Goldman.
I'm in corporate finance right now at a Fortune 50. Same type of work that was described for the position. I live in the Midwest and would definitely be making more money at Goldman (according to Glassdoor anyway).
Is this considered BO or MO? Don't really understand the difference. Thanks.
Financial Reporting is back office. You'll work with Treasury, Product Control, Financial Control and Reg
I've been led to believe that corpfin positions are considered Middle Office by a number of people, though that's all second-hand info so maybe you know better.
Three pieces of (general) advice I got about switching companies:
1) Know the company, so that...
2) you can tell them why you want to make the switch to their company.
and
3) Don't bad-mouth your old company in any way, shape, or form.
Anyone know what to expect for the interview?
Bump. Any other opinions or advice for the interview?
