Opportunities after 2 years
I will be working on a fixed income trading desk next year (dealing with either govt. bonds or credit) at a top 4 bank and I was wondering what your experiences have been regarding opportunities to move desks after putting in 2 years as an analyst. Is this a common path? If you start in inerest rate products, how hard is it to move to something different such as Energy or FX? Does the fact that the product you trade on your desk has low margins affect your ability to move to riskier desks? Thanks everyone.
low margin does not equal low risk.
yes people can move, particularly among the names you mentioned...rates, fx and commodities are often grouped together. you'd be more likely to move between these three (macro driven) than credit and one of them.
Yup. Hard to transition from FI to Commodities, though its not impossible.

it's interesting...i include swaps, treasury,repo under the umbrella of fixed income, but you seem to refer to FI specifically as the credit products.

For the older guys on the board, when an analyst moves during their 3rd year, do they typically get offers to become an associate? I'm assuming if they're asked back for a 3rd year they think you've done ok, but it'd be interesting to know the attrition rate for 3rd years-associate.
the third years i know who left, left of their own choice. the bank would have made them associate.
