PE Analyst Program Thread
Hey guys,
I did some research but haven't seen a post that has the most up-to-date information all gathered within one thread. With investment banks following one another to improve the hours of the junior bankers, PE funds have started to recruit more people straight out of undergrad. I would be interested in hearing which private equity funds have analyst programs, specifically the more well known places like the Megafunds or MM PE like Leonard Green.
It would be nice to know how many they take for summer, how many get return/ft offers, what schools do they mainly recruit from, what office they are in etc. Thanks!
Interested in this as well. OP, does your school have PE recruiting for these top firms?
Also was wondering how many analysts TPG takes in for SF and what schools they recruit from.
There are a couple, but for the sake of anonymity I won't name them. There are places that do not hire from my school but yet has a decent amount of associates working there. I want to see if there are any opportunities they could push for hiring in our school in the future.
KKR and Silverlake have analyst programs.
Yep! Do you know anymore places that hire straight from undergrad and the size of the class?
most of the megafunds hire analysts these days but for the most part only from Harvard and Wharton. KKR, BX, SL, TPG, Bain Cap, Warburg for sure, Apollo I think hires for credit and maybe in general, plus a handful of MM shops
Do you know any the number of analysts that they hire out of undergrad? It would be interesting to see how many non-Harvard/Wharton kids get these positions.
I don't know off the top of my head but you can check through LinkedIn to get a rough estimate. but the answer to your question is not many, and the ones who do are from Stanford, Yale, etc. if you mean how many "non-targets" get them, at the megafunds at least it's pretty close to 0.
Depends on shop. BX, Bain Cap will have 4-5. Not sure about KKR, Warburg. TPG, LGP (wouldn't consider them MM), and SL will have 2-3 though they may have expanded that number in the past year or two. Of course, I'm talking about PE-only here. No idea about their debt/capital markets functions.
How many from non-Havard/Wharton? Similar to what some poster above said, very few outside of Pton, Yale, Stanford. If they do, it's typically from ND, UMich, UVA, Ivey (perhaps 0-1 per analyst class).
Canadian school Ivey (non-HYPSW!!!) has sent people to LGP and Silver Lake Partners for their prestigious analyst programs before.
Bain Capital has an analyst program as well. They have an accelerated process in july for those who have banking offers. On campus recruiting for those who don't.
From what I've heard at Wharton: BX - a few summers, a few FT SL - picking up a lot this year, ~2 summers in Menlo + 2 in NY + 1 London, few full times. KKR - 1 FT Apollo - 2 FT TPG - 1 FT KKR - 1 FT Ares - 2 summers, FT in past and other schools LGP - 1 summers Carlyle - 1 FT Warburg - 1 FT Bain Cap - no summer program(not counting Sankaty), but does FT
Thanks, SBed
What is it like for non MF OCR trying to get into the processes? I've heard of other kids from top BB groups interviewing. Do the head hunters reach out that early? Do they just drop resumes online?
By non MF OCR do you mean an accelerated process that happens late summer?
I mean any process for a kid not from Hvd/Wharton/other OCR schools for MF
If you're in a top group you'll likely get some sort of email during the summer about an information session and/or resume drop for late summer/accelerated recruiting.
If you're talking about fall recruiting for MFs at a non-OCR (non-target) school, you'll have to network to get a look (being a top group during the summer will help).
Interesting thanks
For anyone interested in growth/venture shops as well:
Insight Venture Partners Summit Partners Battery Ventures General Atlantic Accel Partners Goldman Sachs - Principal Strategic Investments and AmSSG (Private Capital Investing)
Bessemer Venture Partners Greylock Partners Union Square Ventures Andreessen Horowitz (I've seen it, but most likely done through referrals/connections) General Catalyst Partners Bain Capital Ventures
With regards to the firms listed above - TPG - been known to take analysts in TPG Growth, but I'm not sure Warburg - does early/growth-stage deals KKR - I hear they're doing something with a growth fund but they're probably not taking people for it yet
I may have forgotten some.
Interesting. Didn't know GA or Accel hired out of undergrad. BCV has largely ceased their VC analyst program (very recently I heard). Then again, I'm not too in tune with the VC world.
outside of Insight and Bessemer, pretty much all the rest of those are much more ad hoc and sporadic with hiring out of undergrad and shouldn't be considered formal programs like the others mentioned in this thread. generally when they do historically, at e.g. Greylock or USV, it's 1 person, MAYBE 2 rarely, every 2-3 years (again, with Insight and to a lesser extent Bessemer as exceptions). it's starting to become more common, and I think we will see more of it, but for now it's still pretty rare. there are a handful of others not mentioned, mostly on the east coast, that are currently hiring or have just hired analysts though.
Upon closer examination, it seems like GA just took one last year - unsure whether they will continue to do so. Accel was hiring summers at Berkeley (and I assume Stanford as well) through March, and said they would hand out FT offers to good interns. I think this is a pretty new program for them.
BCV hired at least one (from Wharton) this year, but it may be true that they are winding down.
Also - Vista Equity Partners hires analysts out of undergrad.
Good intel. Thanks.
Is Apollo FT for credit? Or for PE? Also, are you sure that Carlyle has an analyst program? Haven't heard of it...
Just out of curiosity, can someone shed some light on the actual work / day of a megafund PE analyst? The ship has sailed for me but it would still be interesting to know what kind of work they do, i.e. if the work is comparable to that of the associates.
bump
In case anybody is interested, Bain has been sending out invites for a networking event in NYC this week. It kicks off their accelerated process for those with FT offers.
Every MF/MM with an analyst program has been sending stuff out over the last 2 weeks
