Persuing Investment Banking, Rising senior, sudying abroad in spring, no internship currently. Is there hope?
Hey so I'm a rising senior at a target school (little ivy) with a 3.5 Econ major. I worked for a large tech firm my freshman year and a very boutique wealth management firm last summer. I have been unable to land an IB internship for the summer so far. I'm home for a month (January) then I am in Europe for the entire spring semester due to a study abroad program. Has anyone been in this situation before and has it worked out? I am beginning to feel very stressed. I can't imagine id be able to enjoy my semester abroad knowing I've completely failed at landing a summer internship/ knowing I'll now be limited in my career. I can't back out of my abroad program now because the fee has been paid. Just looking for any advice I think my problem is that I did not do my due diligence of networking beyond the top BB firms. I am networking best I can now but I'm not sure how much it will help. I have had some first rounds but nothing resulted from them yet.
Not sure where you are going in Europe but why not interview for internships here as well? Except for the uk there are a whole lot more off-cycle opportunities available.
I will be in Rome for the spring semester. That is definitely an option I will explore.
I'm in the exact same situation. Is it possible to work at a European bank without knowing the local language? I'll be in Spain and consider my language skills to be intermediate, not strong enough for the work place. Could I still get something here or in another European country with only English?
Aren't you an econ major? You should know that paying for your study abroad trip is a sunk cost-- it shouldn't be considered in future decisions. I guess these "little ivy" kids are IYI's.
Start reaching out to boutiques. You also need to figure out why your interviews did not go well. Were you under-prepared? Did you not network enough beforehand? Was there mustard on your shirt? Something went wrong, and you need to fix it. I hope that helps.
And to answer your question, yes, reaching out to only BBs was a mistake.
