PIMCO Product Analyst Interview
Hello:
Friday, I have my first interview with PIMCO for their product analyst position (phone interview). I was wondering about the types of questions they ask, and how I should prepare for these questions. Cannot find a detailed discussion on this issue here.
Thanks!
I went to a superday with these guys for the product analyst summer internship last season. It was by far the most difficult interview I've ever done for any type of position, and I've interviewed at 30+ places since junior year. Lots of macro questions. Lots of hypothetical investing scenarios. Know your finance stuff. Basic equity/bond math. How interest rates, money supply, quantitative easing, etc. work. Also know the current world macro trends well. Know about China. Commodities markets. Read up on a stock or two. Have an opinion on when rates will go up and why. It's hard to prepare for quickly because you either have learned a lot of this stuff or you haven't.
Two questions stick out: - Design a portfolio for Japanese investors seeking to invest solely in the currency markets and targeting a return of x% per year. - Is oil prices decreasing an inflationary or deflationary force?
Also remember having to explain exactly how quantitative easing works, and being asked to list all major macro events that have influenced the markets year-to-date.
Sounds good. Did you receive an offer from the firm?
No
I believe there were 12 candidates at the superday and they picked two
What type of questions did they end up asking you (remember any specifically)?
Have you heard back from them?
PIMCO Product Analyst (summer internship) Interview (Originally Posted: 01/27/2015)
Hey Guys,
I am a junior studying Financial Engineering/Computational Finance/Quantitative Finance (whatever it is called at your school). I have an interview coming up with PIMCO for the Product Analyst position. I'm not really sure what the position itself entails. Can anyone shed some light on the position and what I might be doing over the summer? I'm pretty confused about this interview cause I have been interviewing for S&T throughout and I'm not sure what to expect. I know a bit about PIMCO but not much about this position.
I'd appreciate any help you guys can give me!
Thanks!
Hi. Do you mind telling how you were notified by them? Did you receive a phone call or an email?
Hey I received an email

Definitely doesn't sound front office and sounds like your a bit cocky no matter what your secret strengths are and I can only imagine how pathetic they are

It is a legit role. A lot of very smart ppl in product mgmt at PIMCO. I am not 100% sure what these guys do day to day but I interviewed for this role in b-school and it is an interesting seat for sure. Portfolio mgmt at PIMCO is effectively impossible unless you're a math or physics Ph.D. from Stanford or MIT etc, so this is about as close as most mortals can get to PM roles there.

Does anyone know anything about this position/ interview for this before? Is it more sales oriented or research? Have an interview coming up, but I can't seem to relocate the role description on the site (I know that this seems pathetic).
