I suppose it depends on the culture of your office, but that suit with a nice pair of brown shoes probably wouldn't raise any eyebrows.

In any case why would you think there's anything wrong with that suit. Are you partially/fully blind?
I bought it as it was on sale and i think it look really nice.. However was just worry that it will raise some eyebrows so want to ask you guys as I can still return it...

It's a basic cheap pinstripe suit. This is certainly not going to raise an eye brow, and its kind of shocking that it causes people to ask this. I would say it is expected that analysts or summer interns where cheap solid/pinstripe navy or charcoal suits like this.

wearing pin stripes as an analyst is not the end of the world like most people say; the key is to get very "subtle" stripes rather than bold in your face stripes. See example:

Makes me laugh when i see young bucks wearing pinstripes with a (fake) hermes tie and a rolex. Dont go rolex unless you have wrinkles. Wrinkles means experience, experience means mistakes, mistake means lessons and lessons means having enough war stories to trade back n forth with clients.
I will never understand the big dick comments that come whenever someone asks a simple question. Go wear the pin stripes, just keep them conservative as mentioned above. Rolex comes with wrinkles? I am sorry, wrinkles come when you are 35 and if you aren't bringing in enough before 35 for buy a shitty Rolex you are a loser.

Ok. I like the idea of having more subtle pinstripes. Hopefully I won't need to go shopping again.
Just make sure the wrinkles aren't in your suit.

I wouldn't, personally. I have heard that the extras - cufflinks, monogramed shirts, pinstripes, etc - are all excessive for a SA, even more so for an intern. On the flip side, I would take into account the firm you will be working at. When I did PWM, it was a small family office where nobody would care or know the difference between pinstripes and windowpanes. Best of luck!

I don't think it should be a problem. Local offices are usually less uptight. See what people are wearing the first week and dress accordingly.
Subtlety is key here; pinstripes are fine provided that they are narrow and unobtrusive. What you want to avoid are chalk stripes (ie: wide) which are gaudy and draw too much attention.
Why not just stick with solid charcoal or navy? They're by far the safest and most versatile suits you will own.

Faint pinstripes are absolutely fine and is a less formal suit than the solid.

Hi everyone, I will be doing an internship at Morgan Stanley Smith Barney. It is a retail brokerage internship and involves some client interaction. Right now I am having a hard time buying suits. It seems like all the Hugo Boss sale suits (from 895 to now 399) are either grey, navy with a bit of subtle striping, or pinstriped. I can opt for a black or dark navy Calvin Klein for around 225 and fit isnt a problem because I can get any suit tailored. Does management for finance frown upon some intern wearing an off color(not black or navy) suit? any ideas what to do for suits? thanks!

Personally I think pin-stripes look whack, but if its really subtle then I don't think it would be a problem.

first of all. DO NOT WEAR A BLACK SUIT TO WORK. those are for very formal occasions. Now, it is acceptable to wear striped suits and probably better since plain navy or charcoal is pretty boring but if you do wear striped suits make sure you buy shirts and ties that match. for example, do not show up in a striped suit with a striped shirt and a striped tie.

You're fine wearing a pin striped suit as long as its not something crazy with huge thick pinstripes. Definitely a no on the black suit.

This question seems very job specific. Some people LOVE making a big deal out of everything, some people couldn't give a shit less what you wear.

No. Don't wear a black suit ever to work. Actually throw away your black suit, and just buy a tuxedo because if its ever formal enough to wear a black suit its formal enough to wear a tuxedo.

OP - I agree that you never need to buy a black suit. If you own one already, leave it in your closet until someone dies. Also, you're completely missing the point of "Casual Friday" if you're wearing a suit...
OP I don't mean any offense, but i think you're missing the point of why you don't wear a black suit to the office in the first place. Solid black suits aren't less formal, they're considered "more" (and i use the term loosely) formal than the navy/charcoal/grey suits seen in the formal office attire setting.
You could probably get away with the black windowpane or pin stripe (as long as it doesn't look like your protecting prohibition-era liquor for the mob), again it all depends on the firm, but solid black should sit for funerals.
With so many different color, shade, pattern, style combinatorics, why would you even bother with black? Unless this is to sate sartorial curiosity......... what's the point?!?!

I've interviewed probably 100 people now. Someone's suit has never factored into the decision.
I am worried that some people here said things like these...
...never wear pinstripe for an interview. These sound more reasonable after I read them again and again.
Just make sure the suit fits you, that's the most important thing.

I bought a suit in Asia that is navy blue, but it has very light, non-broad pinstripes, so I wanted to check to make sure that this is acceptable for a prospective businessman (not just wall street)? I have heard a lot about black with pinstripes, but not navy blue, so I want to make sure that its acceptable to pinstripe navy blue suits, or if I'll look like a joker wearing that?
Also, my suit only cost $50, so I'm wondering if this may be considered too cheap for banking/business. Although it is from one of the more exclusive designers in Asia (its not the Armani, Burberry, etc of Asia but not the Old Navy of Asia either), it fits me well (according to many sources), and I think part of the reasons for the discount is because of currency exchange/COL rates, I just want to make sure that people won't automatically shit on me for being poor?

it's perfect -- you should be wearing navy blue not black, and you shouldn't be wearing flashy club clothes like armani to work. How well it fits is 2x more important than the quality and 1000x more important than the brand. good quality, not a gaudy brand, navy blue -- you should get more of these suits if they're not too expensive

actually i think its perfectly fine. Maybe in real life the stripes are too strong but I have seen plenty of people were suits like that (mind you I am in Europe).
With a light blue shirt and strong tie its a pretty good combo
It's probably great quality and some might have the taste for it, but I would generally stay clear of a pinstripe suit. If you like the suit, no one should stop you from wearing something you want to wear. However, I think pinstripes are more of an 'occasion' type of suit. If you want something a little different than the regular crowd, there are better options than pinstripes. I like the olive look.

I only saw the first image, and the color seems ok, very easy to pair with ties when you keep it with a white shirt.
Even if you are on the broke side of things try to get it tailored, especially the sleeves and pants, it will look a million times better and you will feel more confortable in the interview.

I am interested in picking up a pinstripe suit or two and would like to get something that is fairly conservative and not flashy.
In terms of how far apart the pinstripes are on the suit, what would be better, pinstripes closer together or farther apart? Also, I am avoiding thick pinstripes as those just look odd in my opinion.
Finally, if someone could also comment on the suit (via the link) and whether they would consider this conservative or not, it would be greatly appreciated.
