Pitch an Investment Forum?

I came up with this idea in 20 seconds. Bare with me.

There are a fair number of professionals who browse the Hedge Funhouse so I think the potential for this may be there. Basically anyone with an investment idea of any sorts, fundamental, technical, global macro, l/s, pair trade, all asset classes, can make a pitch in the forum and just like in the resume forum, have professionals (or anyone really) judge, complement, or absolutely berate an idea based on the work put forth. Basically an attempt to demonstrate who really wants to be in investment management as opposed to a bunch of 20 year olds thinking they can be 9 to 5 portfolio managers by 23 and make $93,235,200 a year before bonus. Whenever I network with traders or hedge fund analysts I spend about 5 minutes discussing how they got where they are and anywhere from a half an hour onward discussing trading ideas, and this is usually initiated by them. I can also say discussing ideas and showing a desire to take on risk is probably what has landed me most of my contacts thus far.

Thoughts?

i would die for a forum like this but i'm not sure how practicable it is

i'm post again on this soon (i think)

or, if anyone out there on wso knows if something like this exists out there in the internets i read a blog about hfs, but nothing like the op

I think its a great idea provided the comments are constructive. I fear that threads may devolve into: "Your idea sucks balls" or "I wouldn't pay you to manage bus fare". Also wonder about the incentives for people to reveal their best trade ideas. Wouldn't you execute first before telling everyone? That's why nearly every book with trading strategies doesn't work because they've mostly been arbitraged out, mostly.

But perhaps I'm being a negative Nancy. I welcome such a forum. Googling "Macro Trade Ideas Forum" gives me this: http://www.trade2win.com/boards/economic-fundamental-analysis/85560-mac…-trading-ideas.html

Ante UP!

Even if some things took a nose dive into words that should only be spoken to shitty secretaries, it is pretty easy to weed out the bullshit. Just like what happens in the resume forum.

I didn't envision much of a trading strategies type of discussion, more along the lines of, "I am going long Deutsche Marks because ________). So more of a combo of research and trading with some strategies mixed in to hedge or pair trades, etc.

The feasability of this is an issue.

Here is an investment thesis forum that I came across in winter, which was started by Joel Greenblatt. In order to join, you have to a submit an original idea with a catalyst and submit two additional ideas throughout the year.

I used my guest account to create pdf files so you can see for yourself the depth of their analysis:

+1 on value investors club.

another good one is distressed debt investing club. again, you have to do a write up to join.

I don't see people posting that kind of in depth analysis here, most people probably will post something vague like "i think euro still has some downside due to the execution risk associated with the austerity program, aiming for parity" or "shorting gold, it's an overcrowded trade on the long side and continued deleveraging and general slack in the economy will keep inflation excessively low to nonexistant for a prolonged period of time". Not saying these are bad ideas or that people are not capable of doing a full write up, but i just don't think people will write very much on a casual forum like this.

I would check out such a forum. I think you should screen people, though. Take only people demonstrated some investing sense. I don’t want to waste my time with a bunch of yahoos.

You don’t have to be as exclusive as valueinvestorsclub but at least get a bunch of people who take this seriously – financial professionals, CFA’s and smart people with an interest in the markets. Trolls get laughed off on wso but they would be intolerable on an investing forum

I think you could make a modest sum selling advert space to discount brokers

This is what I was going for. Exclusivity (if that is a word) can be done by just having a moderator delete all the troll shit, obviously being more strict than a regular forum, where I welcome all funny trolls.

There are a few of these. Besides VIC, there's another one called sumzero. These focus on L/S equity. Like the above post stated, there are also forums for distressed debt, commodities, etc.
