Places to work in Baltimore
I am currently a undergrad at UMBC and majoring in Financial Econ. I was wondering does anybody know places around here that recruit? I know my school is not a "feeder school" but its worth a shot looking into some places.
You live in a very strategic location. You don't need to look only in Baltimore. I'd make the trek to DC, Philly, and especially New York since they aren't too far to network. Its a numbers game, and try to strategically meet with a number of people in a day.
T. Rowe
great resource here
in all seriousness, I agree, expand your search. while the commute would suck, DC is not terribly far, and given your location, you probably have a lot of alumni in finance, just leverage your career center, linkedin, whatever. unless you want to absolutely stay in baltimore, in which case Legg Mason and trp come to mind.
im pretty sure i saw a linkedin post for an ib analyst role in Baltimore recently
Thanks for the replies guys! I should i said I live Silver Spring which is around 15 mins from DC. I live on campus in Baltimore though! Are there a lot of firms in DC?
Morgan Stanley has BO positions in Baltimore
Stifel does too
T.Rowe and.... T.Rowe
Oppenheimer was looking for someone. Still is there. Prob a bunch of corporate banking offices. Some funds. Small city so it's going to be limited.
t.Rowe, also pretty sure William Blair has ibd roles in baltimore
There are quite a few small investment banks in DMV area. Some regionals such as BB&T Capital Markets (virginia area), Stifel (baltimore), some PE firms (Sterling Partners, Carlyle), VC FoF/Funds. Also see FBR Capital Markets. Big 4 firms all have tyson corner offices and probably baltimore offices. Than you have Legg Mason + T Rowe. Keep in mind DC area is really where the heart of federal consulting, audit, tax is (obviously), so if you are interested in public sector consulting, etc. DC is great.
There's more in Baltimore and dc than people think. Anything from mm IB to pe to am to corporate banking. Start looking around and you'll find stuff
Isn't Legg Mason in Baltimore?
good firms in the baltimore area (Originally Posted: 06/26/2012)
Hey just wanted to get some advice about firms in the bmore area as that is where I'm from. I know a lot of the names, but I don't really know the reps. Anyone know the reps for am firms like t rowe, IB's like signal hill, and PE firms like JMI Equity are? Are any firms in Bmore pretty well known? None of the BB's really have a big foothold there except DB which has Alex Brown and they do some trading. Also seeing if anyone has worked in the area.
Stifel Nicolaus has an office there..
I am in the Baltimore area too, looking for a fall internship.
Morgan Stanley has some ops down there
If you're interested in trading look up Campbell and Co.
Banking in Baltimore (Originally Posted: 06/30/2014)
Anyone here work in Baltimore/familiar with which banks have an office here? Online applications have (perhaps unsurprisingly) been unfruitful thus far.
Bit of background:
Graduated from a non-target with a 3.7/econ medal winner a year ago and haven't had much luck thus far. Have been working since graduation in a middle office role with great reviews and scored a 740 on the GMAT - don't know if either of these will help much with the search but it gives me a couple of extra data points to try to leverage.
Strategies? Info? Any help is greatly appreciated.
Stifel and M&T Bank (I think) are based there. Deutche Bank also has a presence due to their acquisition of Alex Brown. There are a number of boutiques in the area as well including one that specializes in sports (I found that really interesting).
Also, if you are looking in Baltimore you might as well expand your search to D.C. as well since its only an hour away.
Oppenheimer may have a Baltimore office.
They do, small IB group
not banking, but AM: T Rowe Price & Legg Mason are headquartered there.
Firms in the Baltimore/DC Area (Originally Posted: 05/23/2006)
First, let me introduce myself. My name is Nick, I am a 21 year old undergrad at a non-target school (Unviersity of Baltimore). Really not sure if I want to get into IB. Check that, not sure I have a competitve profile for IB. Just wanted to say nice site, especially for someone like myself who really enjoys reading about IB and the lives of those who actually live it.
Anyway, I was just wondering what firms have IB divisions in the Baltimore/DC area.
Any others?
???
sorry dude, I'm not sure on this one...
As an FYI, we at iBankingOasis appreciate your membership and will look into it. We are still a relatively new site but we are growing rapidly...we are expecting over 1000 users by the end of May.
My guess is that once we hit that mark your questions will not go unanswered like this.
Like, I said, the site is great, and Im sure you guys will explode sooner or later, because there is a real demand for the info some of you bring to the table.
I believe these may be the only IB's in the Baltimore/DC area. I know there are a good number of PE shops and Hedge Funds, but not sure about IB.
Thanks.
Is there a reason you wouldn't relocate to NYC / LA or Boston?
Ive been with my girlfriend since freshman year of highschool (7 years total, we've busted up once or twice but nothing too major).
She's an Elementary Eduaction Major, her parents are old, and she has no desire to relocate. I respect that, so I have pretty much taken relocating off the table.
Plus, Im not sure if my profile is compeititve enough for IB. Im very confident during the interview process; Ive actually never been turned down after receiving an interview. Landing the initial interview is where my problem lies. My school is accredited by the AACSB, but still far from being a target school. I believe that is my major flaw.
Im actually interning with T. Rowe Price this summer in a back office position and Im hoping that will open a couple doors for me. At the same time, Im worried I may Pigeonhole myself into a position I have no desire to pursue after graduation. I most definitely want something in the front office realm. IB and S/T are where my primary interest lie.
Thanks again for the response.
There is no reason you can't get an i-Banking job if you really want one. This job market is pretty good for i-Bankers now -- when I was graduating in 2002, I had to interview w 30 banks to get 1 offer, and I consider myself a decent interview w good creds. You have to try and network, instead of just dropping your resume everywhere. (alums?, iBanking conferences, etc -- don't be shy)
You'd be surprised how open people are to allowing a kid to interview is he/she is really enthusiastic. Tell them you've done a lot of research for the position, you understand the hours can be brutal, but you think that your work ethic and desire would make you an excellent analyst.
On another note, if you've been with your woman since freshamn year of highschool, she must be expecting a ring sometime soon, right? You have to ask yourself, are you ready for that? If not, why are limiting your career choices at age 22 (or about)? Can't she do education anywhere? schools are everywhere, i-Banks are not. Make sure she's a "giver" and willing to compromise or you will have one long marriage ahead of you.
Would she relocate for you if you got a great i-Banking gig in NYC? If she loves you, I say she would. Plus, you're not THAT far from DC. She could go down to see her folks every month or so.
-My 2 cents.
