Please review (IB SA), Take 2
Hi WSO,
First of all, wookie102 and big_dreams_banker thanks a lot! I made all your suggested changes, except one I didn't quite understand (asked in other thread).
I'd really appreciate a review and if you can let me know where you think I stand. This time I've included my school, in case writing "Target" for NYU is misleading.
There's definitely a lot less writing and greater margins (linked to old version for your reference). I like this, but when comparing with some of my peers' resumes, which are overflowing with honors and awards and leadership positions I lack, maybe it sucks. I would leave my server job, but lots of people have told me to take it out so I did.
Also, it's been recommended I make a mission statement / objective describing how I transferred to NYU specifically to pursue a career in investment banking. Thoughts?
Thanks very much!
You spelled American wrong at the bottom.
it says 'Armenian,' not American
How is this SA if you're graduating in December 2010?
-change your graduation date to Jan 2011 (so you are lumped in with the class of 2011 - that's how you're supposed to do it if you graduate a semester early) -bullet points in your IB internship are inconsistent - they should all be verbs. and don't use the same verb twice -for activities - just write "Muay Thai Kickboxing" - you don't need to define it -what finance courses have you taken as a sophomore? -what's with the 3.3 GPA man? that won't cut it for BB SA positions
does the boutique ib makes up for the 3.3? i think thats pretty impressive to have ibd before sa
Not even close to making up for such a poor GPA
Thanks everyone.
Yacht_man: Lol, thanks, just fixed it. Anyone else on here speak American?
tuaj: It turns out those graduating December 2010/January 2011 count as part of the class of 2011 for recruiting.
banker88: The final non-indented bullet without a verb is meant to serve more of a heading role, like "Selected Transaction Experience." Does that make it OK? Any ideas how to make this clearer?
In the previous thread, big_dreams_banker complained that he had to google muay thai, lol. But then again, anyone that would even care that I'm into muay thai would probably know what it is, so I don't know.
As for the GPA, I have one more semester before recruiting to pull it up. (What can I say, that's what happens when you live in the fast lane. J/k, actually it's what happens when you don't do homework or participate in class, which happened to count for a lot. Story of my lifee...)
Drexelalum11: Pretty disheartening to read those harsh words, but thanks for the dose of realism. All else remaining equal, would I be a good candidate if I bring my GPA up to a 3.5? Something greater?
banker88: I've taken Financial Management (introductory corporate finance class), Risk Management in Financial Institutions, Foundations of Financial Markets, Financial Statement Analysis, and Financial Reporting & Disclosure. I think that's it (and the last two are really accounting classes). Before recruiting I will have taken Advanced Corporate Finance as well, and can add another finance class for this semester to my schedule.
You think I should put down relevant coursework?
-Nah you don't need to put down relevant coursework IMHO. -Don't mean to be harsh, but I wouldn't consider anyone below a 3.5 for IBD. It says something about your character- if you don't work hard enough to do well in school, why would you work hard on the job? I don't think having a boutique IB internship makes up for it - which you probably got through a connection. 3 months of an internship don't make up for 2 years of poor school work.
You have to get the GPA up to 3.5, which should not be tough given you are a transfer. Because you'll have completed relatively few credits at NYU, your GPA will still be quite malleable, so working reasonably hard this fall should get it up to 3.5-3.6 fairly easily. A 3.5 is generally the cut off point. I'm not sure how you can sit there and ask if you should go higher, when you failed to get there to begin with. Obviously, it would be best to have a 4.0, but that is no longer feasible. Simply shoot for the highest GPA you can - 3.7 and up is what I would aim for.
I would not put down relevant coursework.
