PNC Investment Banking
Hey guys. I just got a call from a recruiter at PNC in regards to their IB analyst program. I have a phone interview scheduled for later this week. How is PNC considered on the Street and what are their strongest product/industry groups? Also, what questions should I expect in the phone interview? Thanks
Their IBD is DCM and maybe levfin along with that..its nothing special
from my experience ibd phone interviews are more technical than in person interviews because they know you can have all your notes in front of you and your laptop open for reference.
pnc is also big on "why pnc and why banking" (i've interned with pnc before)
Prob do a lot of fit too
Anyone here familiar w PNC? (Originally Posted: 01/31/2011)
How are PNC's capital markets and investment banking summer analyst programs structured? What are the best groups? Pay?
Thanks
program seems very well structured. Pay is standard/good for middle market space. best group depends on what you want to do. pm for more info
???
I am still somewhat of a newbie, so take this with a grain of salt...
But that was not my assessment at all. Assuming you are actually refering to PNC (and not Harris Williams (their actual IB division)). They title the program as IB but you do not do any M&A, IPOs, or public issuances....atleast to my understanding. So I would not consider the job even in the "middle market space" at all....
here is a post on their capital markets where you can read my response. They recruit heavily at my campus and I almost accepted a job there before turning it down and signing w a BB later on... I am glad I did not take the position...

as i said it depends on what you want to do. DCM/ECM and FIG as well as all of the S&T is under the PNC business not HW. The most interesting group is probably structured products.
The program itself IS well structured
What group is best if I wanted to leverage it into a more traditional IB role for FT recruiting? Any specifics on pay?
not sure if it has changed but 2 years ago it was 55+7.5
Do you know SA pay?
PNC capital markets opinions (Originally Posted: 02/25/2015)
Hey I was wondering if anybody knew anything about PNC capital markets internships. I have a superday coming up and would like to know a little more about them. I know that this isn't IB and from previous threads it's apparent ABS and loan syndications are some of the better groups. I was wondering if anyone could comment on pay and if the above still holds true. I have used the search function but most of the stuff is atleast a few years old so I wanted a fresher take.
Don't really have anything to offer other than the one person I know who interned there is now doing S&T at Citi.
I saw some people saying that they jumped to ib at other banks for ft after interning there so was also wondering about this.
The groups you mentioned are still the top groups with ABS being the real prize. Public Finance is also not bad if you're interested in that. You'll get worked the hardest, but they provide the best experience. That said, if you take ABS or Syndications full time, don't expect to be exiting well as the skill sets aren't that transferrable to PE or HF. You can definitely leverage the internship into a FT offer at a respectable bank in M&A or coverage. I don't have updated FT PNC salary info, but a few years ago a 1st year could expect about 70+50. I don't know if they've matched the recent Street bump.
Did you hear back from your superday?
Nope, pretty sure i'm waitlisted at this point as I know they have given offers in waves. I've been in contact with some who also haven't heard back.
The Capital Markets Groups at PNC bumped their base and signing bonus this year. It is now 85 base 15 signing (but diminishes the longer you wait to accept your offer). No insight on other bonuses because I have not started yet.

I have an interview coming up for a PNC Capital Markets FT analyst position and was wondering if anyone has any info about them or advice? I didn't know about their Capital Markets Group until the other day. I'd be working out of their Philadelphia location.
Any help is appreciated!

I've interviewed with IB arms of large regional/super regional banks, there tends to be more fit and less technical than at BBs, elite boutiques or pure play MMs. Articulate why you want to be there, why capital markets and the advantages of being part of a super regional.
PNC Capital Markets - Major contact at the firm (Originally Posted: 08/25/2011)
Hey all,
So kinda funky situation here, seeking everyones advice: I happen to have a major contact at PNC (on a first name basis with one of the bank's 5 regional presidents), and I am basically guaranteed an interview, and maybe more. So best case scenario, I get an offer as an IB analyst there, I will be locking myself out of other offers as other banks don't interview until January if I accept.
I have a pretty competitive profile, 3.9+ in Economics at a semi-target top 20 school, with BB PWM and a Boutique IB under my belt. I'm wondering that if I do end up going PNC SA and then full-time there, am I essentially locking myself out of a PE job two years down the road?
I'm really just fishing for any/all info on PNC's comp (do they pay street?) and exit opps to B-school or PE?
Thanks!
Curious too. from their description on ocr posting seems like they do more capital raising than m&a. But I have no idea
PNC doesn't really have an investment bank; I think they do securitization and different types of lending the traditional IBD stuff is done by Harris Williams
I know that the Capital Markets track two best groups are ABS in NYC and their Loan Syndication and distressed debt specialist group in Pittsburgh, but I'm clueless as to their reps on the street/pay packages. Also anyone heard anything about their S&T rotation program?
90k all in for Philadelphia

I have an on campus interview (undergrad) with PNC's investment banking division this week for their NYC office.
Has anyone been through it?
Can anyone tell what I should expect (I have never taken a finance course in my life and have had very little financial exposure in my past internships. I am an economics major.) ?
Thanks.
P.S. Does anyone know where their NYC office is located? I can't seem to find anything on their website nor was there an address listed in their job ad.

PNC Interview Process (Originally Posted: 01/21/2014)
Does anybody have experience interviewing with them for IBD? If so, what was it like?
PNC doesn't have "IBD". They brand their securitization and loan syndication groups as IBD and have a small bond underwriting desk I believe that is relatively inactive (light distribution).
Keep this in mind as you prep for an interview.
I'm assuming this is for their superday? I interned with them last summer and received an offer but accepted an offer somewhere else. All of the questions are very behavioral based. My entire interview only consisted of two technical questions (how does net income flow through the 3 statements and how would you value a bond?) Just make sure you know the basics (ie, why PNC) and have some examples of how you showed leadership (I got asked about leadership qualities/styles in every interview). Its a very laid back process however all of the interviews (I think 8?) were 2 on 1. Also, PNC does not have a traditional IB group as that is handled by Harris Williams. Their LevFin and syndications groups are more along the lines of IB however most of the roles they fill with interns are in the "C&IB Group", which stands for corporate and institutional banking...not investment. I would do a little research about corporate banking and you'll be fine. Good luck!
To add to others, HW has separate recruiting. PNC's lev fin team is solid IMO (worked with the Chicago team).
PNC Hours (Originally Posted: 12/20/2011)
Curious as to how PNC's corporate banking hours for interns rack up against IB intern hours. To be honest, the more the better, but this really just sprouts from curiosity. Thanks for any help.
Does corporate banking = commercial banking?
Depends on the bank.
The hours are nowhere near as intense as banking... your hours will be very chill
Interned at PNC cap markets, the corporate banking interns got in at 9 took 1hr lunches, and left at 5 at the absolute latest.
Thanks for the heads up everyone.

I have an on-campus interview with PNC this week. Has anybody here interviewed with PNC for their FT analyst IBD position? What questions did they ask?
Thanks, mkballer
Got this brainteaser:
Interviewer: Why PNC?
Had no idea what to say.
I didn't think PNC had an IBD.... I know they own Harris Williams but didn't know there was a PNC branded division
They have a branded "investment bank" but all their M&A revenue comes through Harris Williams. PNC's investment bank is more capital raises and sales / trading.
lol to analystforhire's brainteaser hahahahah
why me?
PNC IB first round interview (Originally Posted: 09/30/2009)
So I've got an on campus first round with PNC IB next week. Anyone been through it? What to expect? Technical or Fit?
Thanks
Is this for FT or Internship?
FT
Unless you just have no background in finance, I'd expect mostly fit. Key question obviously is why you'd want to go to PNC as opposed to another (better-known) bank.

I hear PNC Bank is looking to start an investment banking division. Should I take this over a goldman/CS LA equivalent?
yeah, i heard about PNC doing that. i wouldn't take it over goldman necessarily, but def over CS la. Credit Suisse is really going down hill - not somewhere you want to be. work hard to prepare for your pnc interviews and hopefully you'll get a job there.
why CS is going downhill?
its possible to get 4.0s at ivys?
yep, if you get straight a's.
wow, PNC is starting an investment bank? That's amazing. I would totally work there!
yeah. should be a great place to launch a career.
...to start your career at an unproven player in IB? There must be something I'm missing here, unless every poster so far is just being sarcastic.
yeah, there is something youre missing - a brain. PNC is going to be the biggest player in IBD by 2050. Mark my words.
PNC is a great choice - don't listen to rickets, bankerssuck.
doesn't everyone at the top ivies have a 4.0? Professors throw around those Gentleman's A's like candy.
I know princeton's going through some crazy deflation thing but harvard is still a strong believer in giving good grades to people who deserve them. half of our class graduates with honors.
I know this is a pointless post but PNC is currently using Harris Williams to provide all ibanking services, so that is a good sign
Exactly! my impression is that PNC is really pumping resourecs into their Harris Williams aquisition. What's so tempting about PNC is that I get the feeling these guys are about to blow up (in a good way)
feel exactly the same way. you've got a good head on your shoulders.
does anyone on this post know what the culture's like at PNC?
PNC is so fratty. It's fuckin' awesome.
A guy I know works for PNC. Says the culture is pretty chill there.
I have a friend who is at PNC's A&M division... they are rapidly on the rise and will soon be ahead of all the other bulge brackets... I want to work for that division. Would a summer research internship be a good path or would it have to be corpfin?
Just look at the company motto: PNC leading the way
To sherminator, you'll never get a corpfin summer there without priod summer in bb m&a
So does anyone know the details on Harris Williams? Culture, Lifestyle, future?
Not that location is crucial, but PNC is in pittsburgh. you wanna go there? I mean I grew up in the burgh and loved it. but I certainly would choose nyc over it coming out of college....which i already have. and PNC recruits at schools like PSU and Pitt and other non-targets mostly. How on earth are you claiming that "you definitely won't get an internship there without bb experience"-- once again, people blowing things way way out of proportion
Ironboy, no offense but did you really think the 10 posts above (including my own) were dead serious?
ibanking1234 and his schizophrenic alter egos have been spamming this board for PNC for a while now. Everyone knows that PNC is not a player.
yeah i kinda did. sorry if i missed the sarcasm. usually im pretty good witht that, but not here apparently

UPDATED: 4:49 PM 2 Louisville PNC branches get 'green' certification The Courier-Journal
The U.S. Green Building Council has certified PNC Bank’s new branches in Taylor Center and Old Brownsboro Crossing.
The branches are the first buildings in Louisville to get the council's Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design rating.
Among other steps, the branches' operating costs are reduced nearly 45 percent with maximum use of natural light and construction waste was recycled or salvaged.
You are not clever.
This entire board is going to shit. These super-sarcastic posts laden with IBO inside jokes are getting really annoying. As if this place weren't redundant enough with the serious questions.
1) So sasq, you're one of the PNC high rollers?
2) "As if this place weren't redundant enough with the serious questions." Exactly. That's why there are some light hearted threads.
sasquatch, every party needs a pooper and that's why we invited you.
Holy shit...the local PNC bank in my neck of the woods is throwing a Lemon Party this weekend. Think I should go?
