Portfolio/Program Trading
Had a phone interview for an equity portfolio/program trading role. Sounded to me like a really interesting and exciting job. I'm weighing it against a couple other positions. Was wondering if anyone had any experience on one of these desks. Had a couple of specific questions:
- Long term is this a good desk? Growth area for industry?
- Is this considered a middle office or front office role?
- What skills or background would set someone apart for a junior level seat?
Program trading desks handle block trades that occur during events such as an index rebalancing. It's a front office role that is highly transaction oriented. You need to have good attention to detail above all.
Thanks ... that's really helpful. Sounds like this job is a good fit for me.
Program trades are usually executed if index prices sink or rise to a certain level. This tends to create very volatile situations. As a result, there are restrictions on times when program trading can be used.
I am curious about what PT desks do as well
what skillset is used on this desk (program trading)?
How’s the comps like? Is this a desk that’s growing or shrinking?
