internship title for resume
For those of you that have interned at small M&A boutiques and didn't really have an official title, what did you put on your resume?
I was thinking... "Investment Banking M&A Intern"

Also interested in this...Is it wrong to put "Investment Banking Summer Analyst" if it's a boutique and is not considered an official SA program? Would it be better to just put "Investment Banking Intern"?
Summer analyst is just a fancy way of saying summer intern.
you're an intern.
Intern, Investment Banking Division - M&A
what if its like a 6 man boutique? and the whole place is just an M&A advisory firm
I think it comes down to personal preference. Personally, I think if you aren't truly offered an official "Summer Analyst" position at a MM or BB, listing that comes off as fairly pretentious. In all reality, the analysts, associates, or VP's reviewing your resume are familiar with the difference between a "Summer Analyst" position and an Internship at a smaller shop.
If your shop is exclusively M&A, I have seen people with extremely respectable resumes put "M&A Intern" or "Mergers & Acquisitions Intern". If your shop extends past M&A work, I would put "Investment Banking Intern". Personally, I think "Investment Banking M&A Intern" sounds a bit redundant. It's pretty obvious that the M&A group would be in the IBD (at a firm of any size).
I would use "Investment Banking Intern." This was the official title given to interns at my shop.
Summer Vice President, M&A, Investment Banking Division
if i put "M&A Intern" im afraid people might think i was in corporate development
seriously? who's gonna read investment banking summer analyst and then assume its pretentious. you were an analyst working there over the summer. simple as that
whenever i see a resume that says M&A intern i just think its bs work
If you work just in the private capital raising side of the business, do you think it would still be okay to say "investment banking intern"?
bump
Summer Analyst. But it doesn't really matter though.
Internship title (Originally Posted: 07/07/2012)
Hey guys, I've been a fan of the site for a while and making my first post, so please tolerate my noobish question. I'm currently a sophomore doing an internship with a European bank in their IBD (M&A). I was told by my boss that my title is "summer analyst". When I recruit next year for SA positions, I know that the title I put on my resume will get verified through a background check if I get an offer. Since the bank also has summer analysts in other departments like S&T, AM, etc, what should I put as my title on my resume?
Can I put "Investment Banking Summer Analyst" or do I have to put "Summer Analyst, Investment Banking"? I ask because on a background check I think my title would be "summer analyst" and the division would be "investment banking".
I know this might be a really stupid question but I wanted to be sure that the title I put on my resume doesn't cause issues. Thanks in advance!
It won't matter. Put whichever you prefer. If you put Investment Banking Summer Analyst, you are not lying.
since it is for your resume this really should not matter. anyone reading your resuming is likely to have the credentials to know exactly what your position was based on the descriptive content.
don't see a problem with putting IB SA as your title though if you think it will help.
both are fine: "Investment Banking Summer Analyst" or "Summer Analyst, Investment Banking" neither will give you any trouble at background check - dont worry!
Mine was literally Summer Analyst - blahblabhalbh group/ blahblah program (which obviously wasn't the official title)
I've seen both "Summer Analyst" and "Investment Banking Summer Analyst". So wither will do, and I'm sure other variations wouldn't change anything.
Relax. If in the future whether you land a job or not, it won't be because of how you worded "Summer Analyst".

If I worked for a boutique over the summer where there weren't divisons, what should I use as the resume title next to Summer Intern? They do 99% M&A/1% private placement. Would something like Summer Intern, Investment Banking Mergers and Acquisitions be ok to write on a banking resume?
i would say,
BANK ABC Investment Banking Analyst June-whatever
under that just write what you actually did. I assume people reading your resume would be able to understand what you were doing based on content
Investment Banking Summer Analyst
I would probably go with:
Summer Analyst - Mergers and Acquisitions Investment Banking
or
Summer Analyst - Investment Banking
Depending on whether you want to showcase the M&A. The previous recommendation is fine as well (the one that includes "Summer"), however - it is a matter of preference as they are all adequate from a formatting and stylistic standpoint.

So it wouldn't make a difference whether it is Summer Analyst or Summer Intern? Cos the OP said he' s "Summer Intern". And I would think Summer Analyst would do more "investment banking-related" tasks, while Summer Intern is more of a secretarial job. At least that is my impression....
I wouldn't assume that by any means - a Summer Analyst is a Summer Intern - before BBs starting referring to the internship as a Summer Analyst position, it was just a summer internship in investment banking. "Summer Analyst" is just an easy way to refer to a summer internship designated for the summer months, traditionally, June through August. His responsibilities and projects will reflect his experiences and whether they were of an investment banking caliber or more of a secretarial, ops, etc role.
Summer Analyst is a nicer sounding version of Summer Intern

So I have been an ER intern at a MM bank over the course of this summer. I know this is a minute detail but what should it be titled on my resume? Equity Research Summer Associate or Equity Research Intern? Thanks in advance.
Summer analyst intern or summer associate intern
I normally formart it as this: Summer Analyst - Equity Research (Group)
I guess my big question with this is "summer analyst" accurate since entry level in ER is associate?
