I think it comes down to personal preference. Personally, I think if you aren't truly offered an official "Summer Analyst" position at a MM or BB, listing that comes off as fairly pretentious. In all reality, the analysts, associates, or VP's reviewing your resume are familiar with the difference between a "Summer Analyst" position and an Internship at a smaller shop.

If your shop is exclusively M&A, I have seen people with extremely respectable resumes put "M&A Intern" or "Mergers & Acquisitions Intern". If your shop extends past M&A work, I would put "Investment Banking Intern". Personally, I think "Investment Banking M&A Intern" sounds a bit redundant. It's pretty obvious that the M&A group would be in the IBD (at a firm of any size).

since it is for your resume this really should not matter. anyone reading your resuming is likely to have the credentials to know exactly what your position was based on the descriptive content.

don't see a problem with putting IB SA as your title though if you think it will help.

I would probably go with:

Summer Analyst - Mergers and Acquisitions Investment Banking

or

Summer Analyst - Investment Banking

Depending on whether you want to showcase the M&A. The previous recommendation is fine as well (the one that includes "Summer"), however - it is a matter of preference as they are all adequate from a formatting and stylistic standpoint.

So it wouldn't make a difference whether it is Summer Analyst or Summer Intern? Cos the OP said he' s "Summer Intern". And I would think Summer Analyst would do more "investment banking-related" tasks, while Summer Intern is more of a secretarial job. At least that is my impression....

I wouldn't assume that by any means - a Summer Analyst is a Summer Intern - before BBs starting referring to the internship as a Summer Analyst position, it was just a summer internship in investment banking. "Summer Analyst" is just an easy way to refer to a summer internship designated for the summer months, traditionally, June through August. His responsibilities and projects will reflect his experiences and whether they were of an investment banking caliber or more of a secretarial, ops, etc role.
