Ridiculous that no one has mentioned Marlin Equity Partners.
Would add Marlin Equity Partners to the list of top niche / up and coming PE shops. they invest mostly in software/tech but also in services, industrials, consumer. Think of cross between Vista and Gores (several ex heads of Gores are at Marlin now). Understand Marlin has tier 1 returns and is growing very fast which is a major positive (look at AUM trajectory of last 5 funds). They also have a flexible mandate so they compete against top growth equity funds, midmarket funds, turnaround funds depending on the type of deal, but they are also competing against the big names e.g. Advent, KKR in the upper mid market. Will be interesting to see what happens - the next fund could be $3bn-$5bn if they continue to perform as historically. Based on their website, they're also attracting ex bankers from top firms/schools e.g. wharton, yale, / GS, MS, HL, etc. They also have a highly operational focus like Vista.
Some of the names mentioned are not doing too hot (check fund sizes over time / returns). You want to join the next top fund but at a stage where the risk doesn't outsize the returns.
Would also add HgCapital but not growing as fast
Are you going to make the same Marlin post in every private equity thread on this website?
To actually add to the discussion, there are growth equity funds like Catalyst Investors, TCV, and Trident Capital as well as larger players like Siris Capital. ABRY Partners kind of fits as well.
Lots of firms crossing over to growth, including venture firms raising growth vehicles to meter into their winners and tech hedge funds (Tiger cubs, mostly).
As far as traditional GE, tech buyout shops -- i'd add Spectrum, Summit, TA, Sageview, Riverwood, SIG, IVP
Questions about Technology Private Equity/Venture Capital (Originally Posted: 06/08/2013)
This is my first post so please forgive any mistakes.
I am currently interested in Technology Private Equity/Venture Capital. I was wondering about the best way to break into this field. Is it best to work as an Investment Banking analyst first, or, as this is a more specialized field, is it better to have some experience working in technology first? Also, is there a difference as far as preferred background between Private Equity and Venture Capital?
Thank You
Based on the PE and VC funds' websites that I've looked at, most of the associates came from BB IB groups, but there are some MM bankers too. They mostly come from TMT banking, but their are also exceptions.
Okay--Thanks for your response.

I was wondering if there are any big private equity firms that invest in any technology companies besides bio-tech companies.
yes, there are
Yes. Silver Lake and Providence Equity would be two of the big ones that concentrate on the sector. Almost all of the large-cap and mega-cap PE firms have some tech exposure.
from what I hear Silver Lake is the best of the best... there are DOZENS though
The best place to look will be around areas that have heavy tech investments by VC, so SF and Boston probably come to mind first.
