Prospective Job - Buy or Sell?
So there comes a time early in everyone's career when they say to themselves, 'What the fuck am I doing here?'
I've spent most my time out of undergrad (going on 2 years now) working in the BO @ a BB and the MO @ a Ratings Agency. About 1-2 months ago I finally decided to put my foot down and start interviewing for FO opportunities at other companies (namely sales positions). As you could have guessed, it hasn't been as easy as planned, although I have landed a handful of interviews for sales gigs. Unfortunately, in this market, 40yr Olds with MBAs are willing to take the same pay as I would. I digress..
So finally I've run into one opportunity that is a bit out of the realm of finance, but is a hell of a lot better than sitting infront of a spreadsheet all day or settling trades during lunch.
The role -
Hedgefund Software Sales/Investor Relations
-Small (15-20ppl), but great company who sells Apple-like (easy) software to Hedgefunds
-Pays about the same as a 1st yr Ops analyst
-Heavy client interaction- Powerpoint demonstrations, Lunches, Meetings, etc. You are the face of the firm
-Interacting with PMs and Hedgefund Managers/Traders/Higher Ups
-Expected to go public in 5 or so years
-Upon signing, you obtain a % ownership in the company
-CEO was once a head trader in Asia @ a BB.. knows the industry very well, very cool dude
Buy or Sell?
Equity in a growing fin tech company > MO at a ratings agency. Buyer.
Dude if you think it will be fun and pays decently and you get the upside of equity share. why the fuck not!
Definitely buy, that's not even a question given your other options and how shitty life in finance is right now for job seekers.
Plenty of upside with the equity, plus its a change of scenery
There is no clear-cut path to where you want to be in life. Clearly, you know where you will be at 5-10 years down the road in your ops/mo path, time to shake it up and try something new and see where that goes.
Like the old quote "If you always do what you've always done, you will get the same results you've always gotten"
Thx for the responses.. I was very ready to move on the offer, now I definitely will.
Sounds like a great opportunity. Chance for equity and to help a company grow before IPO....Buy Buy Buy.
