Pushing Back
So throughout my finance tenure, I've adopted and maintained the usual junior resource demeanor. In other words, do as you're told, don't talk back, eat the shit sandwich with a smile on your face, and always try to appease the boss even if he's off the reservation. However, after noticing that (i) being the junior guy that just takes the shit often invites further dumping of shit and (ii) some of mid-level guys occasionally push back hard without getting dinged (on the contrary, it often results in the other person backing down) as well as just getting tired of not being allowed to have any balls, I've started to "let my presence be felt" a bit more so to speak. I've actually started to let a little anger show when I think a senior person is trying to fuck me unnecessarily. And I'm not talking about getting mad about too much work or something like that, I'm talking about when someone is trying to just dig at you, pin some blame on you, or shit on you when it's unwarranted. Basically just keeping your rightful dignity as a man.
Anyone else been in the same boat? Am I committing a little career hari kari here?
I think this is an excellent idea as long as you ease into it, which it sounds like what you're doing. Just remember to be direct, always use a calm, but strong tone of voice when saying "No" and you'll be just fine. I'm proud of you man!
Pushing back is only really effective if your work is respected, and if you've developed a solid reputation. It sounds like that is the case for you. I'm of the same mindset that there's no use in being a total bitch and rolling over for every little thing that comes your way.
