Mention Community College on Resume????

Hey guys,

I go to a semi-target school, my GPA is 3.65. I transferred from a Community College in FL, and my GPA was 3.8. I am doing an internship at a mid-size investment bank, in the bond sales/trading desk. I am graduating in May and currently looking for jobs. Should I mention that I went to CC for two years on my resume? If not, what dates do I put for my current school, just September 2009 - May 2011?

Also, my major is Economics-Finance. If I take one course on the summer, I could complete a Global Studies minor. Is this minor worth it taking a course over the summer?

Thanks!

I would definitely take do the minor especially if you only need one class over the summer. The only way I would say no is if by doing that it meant not being able to do an internship. If that happens to be the case, can't you just overload next semester.

I can't really help you on the whole community college thing, but I will say that on my resume it just says "May 2011" as the graduation date. Even for jobs and internships I just list "Summer 200X). I haven't really had a job that wasn't an internship so I figure everyone understands it's the summer months. I think formatting it this way might help with your situation.

Not sure about what to do in the whole interview process though when they ask how you came to go to school where you're at. Definitely don't lie.

Hope this helps.

Regardless if people care or not, he's just one class away from taking it and having 2 majors and a minor is better than just 2 majors.

Thats the dumbest thing I've ever heard. What if a winter session will get him a minor in Pottery?

Its a waste of time and money. He's graduating in May, the last thing he needs to be doing is taking a needless class.... unless its something you're taking for your own personal interest because its something you can't get enough of and you wont get a chance to explore it further after college... I absolutely wouldn't waste time on this.

Its of no value.

Tough situation, because those are significant activities. But I would say it might be best to play it safe by not putting the community college on your resume.

@InterestedinVC: Thank you so much for your advice. So you also think that including CC would definitely devalue my current school's merit? I do not have significant activities in current school though (just some mentorship program and member of finance/ accounting club) given that I am transfer student. Therefore, my time at the current school is not much for activities.

I did comm. College through a dual credit high school program. And in my personal experience I can say it would be a demerit, and it was back when I did have it on my resume before I decided to take it off. People just don't have a good outlook on community colleges. I think it might change since college is so expensive so more and more people are going to junior and community colleges to save more. But as of now, too many people don't regard it well, in my opinion.

I think you can keep it on there if you can state a good reason (financial, family...) and elaborate on how you learned from the experience. And the extracurriculars are impressive.

Thank you so much for your comments. They are all very helpful. In fact, I went to CC for financial reason. I am an international student and have to work 2 part time jobs to support my own living and education in America. I think I will tell the interviewers my story and carefully elaborate my experience as you advise.

Thank you so much your help, interestedinVC and BB. I really appreciate it.

If you are an intern at an investment bank, shouldn't you know better? Just put your graduation date and college you attended. You are making Florida look bad. You must be in the Miami areas since that's the only financial related area in Florida regarding trading and Madoff.

No.

"Look, you're my best friend, so don't take this the wrong way. In twenty years, if you're still livin' here, comin' over to my house to watch the Patriots games, still workin' construction, I'll fuckin' kill you. That's not a threat, that's a fact.

Seems that everyone agrees that I should leave it off. However, if I only post my target school (that I will attend for 2 yrs) and not the CC on my resume as well, won't that be untruthful? Won't it basically be akin to covering up the fact that I didn't attend the target for the full 4 yrs?

Omit on your resume. But include on your background screen. There is no reason to put CC on your resume.. as long as you went to a 4-year. At my last job when we were screening for interns, as soon as CC was listed, resume would be deleted/ignored. No joke. No matter how talented student was. I doubt anyone with CC on the edu background alone has the necessary skills nor did they take the necessary courses required for a job in finance. Maybe a bank teller or customer service at a bank, but not analyst+

We've had this discussion before but it definitely depends on the firm/group you are applying for. The consensus was that most BBs/elite boutiques may see it as a blemish and some of the MM and underdog firms may see it as a sign of you overcoming adversity. However, there are always going to be the underdogs at the BBs who may identify with your story but it's a crapshoot if it will ever get in their hands to begin with. The safe bet is to not list it for most/all positions but be ready to talk about it, I wouldn't lie about it if asked but don't necessarily need to bring it up. It's a sad reality that some people would look down on someone for choosing a CC and coming out better for it, but it is what it is. Good luck. I'd definitely follow-up on here later with your experiences of listing it/not listing it and how people viewed it because I know there are a lot more people in your shoes.

This to all my hatin' folks seeing me getting guac right now..

I can speak to this from experience. I originally left my CC on my resume only for the first semester when I transferred into 4 year institution. I would say after your first semester, leave it off. I actually do not list in on my LinkedIn (This is due to me creating my LinkedIn a year, or so, into my junior year.

I am from FL, but I do not study in there. I study and work in the New England area. When I applied to my internship, I just put my current school and GPA. the thing is that for full time jobs, they will most likely ask for transcripts, and it will show that I transferred from a CC two years ago. I do not want to be looked at as a liar. that is all. Any other criticism?
