Middle Office to S&T

Hello all,

Just heard something today that I thought I would share with you all as I know that the move from MO to FO is always a topic that gathers interest.

I work in a BB in London, and a friend of mine in the FX product control team told of an AVP (a few years experience) who was on a trial period with the FX trading desk. He had to work 2 hours before his PC job and 2 hours after, every day for a month. He also had to submit trading strategies and market predictions for the next week, month and 3-month periods. These would then be reviewed by four or five of the traders on the desk once those three months had passed. They would then decide if he could make the move.

How did he get this trial? He asked the head of the desk if he could go for coffee to discuss.

I'll piggyback on this a bit... Maybe my experience is skewed, but I've seen a lot of these moves happening over the past few years (within BB S&T). A few instances of "oh crap, this guy quit/left, we need someone who understands this product now" that ultimately allows the MO guy for that product to jump in the hot seat. I've seen it happen across both Trading and Sales, and honestly, I think it's great. The guys that get those positions are those that worked their ass off (with a MO salary) for the hope that one day they could get the chance.

Come to think of it, I'm pretty sure that of the FO positions that opened up, the majority of them went to MO guys... so the MO to FO transition is definitely not far fetched.

This is happening a lot more at banks.

When there's a hole to fill, banks are getting wary of hiring some freshly laid off trader who may just be more interested in punting shit around rather than working on developing the common goals and platforms of the desk. This is the issue we were just discussing on the desk today, actually... currently looking to fill a seat, none of us are really interested in an outside hire, would rather poach a smart systems developer from IT or a keen guy in risk and train him up on the way we want things to be done.
