MBA IBD Associate Recruiting
There is a lot of material on this forum regarding the Analyst recruiting process, but I was hoping some folks could shed some light on the MBA IBD Associate recruiting process.
A few questions to get the discussion going:
-Do you have to have a specific industry for your story? Some banks like Moelis and Evercore have a generalist Associate program while others place you into an industry group
-Do you need directly transferable experience pre-MBA? i.e. transaction advisory/ valuation
-How competitive is F100 corporate finance in terms of pre-MBA work experience when recruiting
Any other info from someone that has gone through the process would be much appreciated
bump
i just have second hand info on this (from ppl i know who went through the process), but they had extremely varied backgrounds- 1 even from teach for america, and had interviews at most of the firms they wanted to
i think the ranking of the MBA school itself far outweighs your past experience when it comes to firms wanting to recruit you (M7 school with no relevant experience is probably more attractive to Goldman than School #25 with transaction experience)
could be wrong though, again I've never gone through this process, just what I've heard
Yes, you will have to prepare explanations/show interest in industry groups that you are recruiting. When you are talking to a BB, you will have to discuss why you are interested in a particular coverage/product group. When you are talking to an EB, you have to sell why you want a generalist program.
No you do not, you have to have a story for why you want to work in investment banking and connect that to your background and experiences. But those experiences do not need to be directly applicable (although that obviously helps).
Corporate finance/Big 4 accounting are both common backgrounds for people recruiting for banking at the associate level.
The thread I started a few years ago should help

Any word on IBD Associate (MBA) FT Recruiting (Originally Posted: 09/19/2012)
I know that most firms have already handed out offers to SAs, but are the BBs and boutiques exclusively filling positions from the summer class?
Haven't really heard much and not sure if the FT OCR process will be a joke or non-existent.
I know someone at Booth who is recruiting full time for IBD associate this fall. She seems to not be worried. Based on what, I'm not sure.
bump... any movement?
Recruit directly as 2nd year associate post-mba (Originally Posted: 04/10/2012)
Hey guys,
Lets say someone is a Senior Manager in Advisory at a Big 4 (insurance actuarial stuff, capital management experience) If such person does an MBA at a top 5 bschool, does such person start as 1st year associate or for some reason they start as 2 year or more.
Is there such a thing as being overqualifed despite being in the correct age range?
Another question, would that person be competitive to apply for a MM PE fund (something specialized in FIG).
I am currently a Manager. Would the jump to Senior Manager be marginally worth it or should I just do the MBA now (contemplating whether to defer my MBA plans for one year). I am currently 27 (28 at matriculation).
1st year asso 4sho
