Samsung Global Strategy Group

Does anyone have any info about the Samsung Global Strategy Group? It's supposed to be some sort of Internal Consulting program.

  • Does anyone know of any exit opps?
  • Career trajectories?
  • Target industries?

Apparently, they don't take 1st yr. interns so I'd have to wait until my 2nd year to apply, but I'm interested in learning as much as i can about the program. The alumni I've reached out to so far have only just started, so I don't feel as if I'm getting a thorough enough picture of the pros, cons, and potential outcomes.

What is Samsung Global Strategy Group?

The best way to learn about the Samsung Global Strategy Group, beyond what is available on the Samsung website, is to try and connect with someone in the program. WSO users were mainly able to report what they’ve heard from others:

From Certified User @on the road"

It's an internal consulting group for the Samsung Group. It exits into different Samsung verticals and is a bit more international than the rest of the company.

  • Recruiting:The interview process is case-based so you'll need to be proficient at cases but your cases will be very focused on the type of work/business units that Samsung is doing, ex: new product entry, increasing revenue/reducing cost, etc.
  • Exits: You will get lots of exposure into different Samsung business units. Over time it may be possible to get to a senior position within one of the Samsung subsidiaries, particularly one of the branches outside of Korea. I think rising through the ranks within Korea may be tough.
  • Background: Definitely don't have to have MBB background to land a spot. Additionally, I think having a finance background definitely doesn't hurt.

I browsed the entire site and didn't see this up anywhere, so I apologize if this question has already been answered. You monkeys were all very helpful the last time I posted a help topic, so thought I'd give it another shot.

I'll be attending B-school (Tuck) this fall, and my own background is in corporate finance (3 yrs in FP&A at a F100, and another 4 yrs in Project Finance/M&A at a well known media company). However, I'm looking to try something different this time around and don't want to end up on the IB/MBB path. Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

sorry, just saw this. in response to requests to post some of the info I sent, have excerpted relevant info below. might be a bit disjointed as text comes from a few questions/messages. hope it's helpful.

I didn't work in the group but know people that did. It's an internal consulting group for the Samsung Group. It exits into different Samsung verticals and is a bit more international than the rest of the company. My understanding is they do recruit at Tuck so you're in good shape there.

Recruiting:

1) Let me answer in two parts: 1) Yes, the interview process is case-based so you'll need to be proficient at cases but the scope of the cases may not be as wide as you would get when you interview for consulting companies--your cases will be very focused on the type of work/business units that Samsung is doing so--new product entry, increasing revenue/reducing cost, etc...2) Regarding showing interest, I know for a fact they have hired Tuckies into the group within the last 5 or so years so I would reach out to those folks to start showing interest and even if they've left Samsung they can share their experiences, refer you to people still there, etc...

Exits:

2) You will get lots of exposure into different Samsung business units. Yes, I think over time it may be possible to get to a senior position within one of the Samsung subsidiaries, particularly one of the branches outside of Korea. I think rising through the ranks within Korea may be tough but starting in the strategy group and then jumping into say into the US TV or phone business would be a nice way to plot a trajectory. The group itself is well-respected within Samsung so that's a plus.

Background:

3) Definitely don't have to have MBB background to land a spot. Additionally, I think having a finance background definitely doesn't hurt. I think if you get a good internship with a large name brand/blue chip company in a functional area (e.g., sales/marketing) that'd be a nice combination with your finance background and set you up nicely for recruiting w/Samsung in your 2nd year. For example, let's say a summer internship w/GE (or other blue chip company) + finance background + Tuck MBA, would make you competitive I think.

So it will not be tax free. But as a foreigner your tax rate is amazingly low with 18.5%. The 170k include the housing and additional benefit or is it just base+performance?? Would be great to have some more insights. I am a German worked for big german car manufacturer in Germany and now working in Korea for the other BIG Tech Company so I know about tax. Will start MBA next year and like to have another stint in Korea with Samsung. I speak Korean intermediate at the moment

Would love to get any more info on this as it's my top choice after I get my MBA in the next 3-5 years.

I know they pay you the housing in Seoul. Up to 3.1M Won its around 2800Dollar. If you have kids rhey pay for the international school about 15.000 Dollar per year and you get flight tickets home when you have worked for a year. Usually thereare two tracks industry and consulting. For Industry you will join an affiliate after 1-2years and work in Korea but you have to find an exit opp or you have just two choices: Korea or Out

Ahh does anybody know if they also recruit PhD? I have a PhD but not a MBA, but I read on the homepage they recruit MBA and PhD from top tier university and career progression in one of Samsungs buisness areas. If anybody knows about the odds of a PhD I would love to here your thoughts. Best

One of my MBA classmate is doing the program and I caught up with him recently and he's having mixed feeling about the job after a year in. Great worldwide assignments and decent package, but the Samsung culture is quite toxic and the exit opportunities are not looking too good for non-Koreans (pretty much only Koreans are in leadership position worldwide). He was gunning for MBB and didn't get in so gives you a sense of who's in the group.

Is there anyone with actual experience that can chime in? Quality of projects, work life balance, hours, etc... As far as exit opportunities.. shouldn't it be pretty easy if you network? I'd imagine having decent pre-mba experience + M7 MBA + strategy consulting at Samsung + International Experience with a bit of networking shouldn't make it too difficult to find an exit.. right?
