Extending summer internship- possible?
Hi,
Going to start an IB summer internship with a BB in the S. hemisphere this Dec-Feb. I am contemplating taking the semester immediately following the internship off and traveling for what would be the second half of it, because I only need to do one out of two semesters next year to graduate. I will need to work for a bit before I travel- do banks extend summer internships under any circumstances, considering I'm not immediately going back to school? Would it be strange for me to ask if it's possible to stay on for an extra month or two?
yes, banks may extend. can't hurt to ask.
Ideally I'd like to have the information as soon as possible, so I can kinda map out a timeline for my year/my plans. When would the best time be to ask? If my internship starts in December, should I wait till I've started to ask? That'd be my best guess.
Yes, I have seen interns at BB's having their summer programs extended assuming they were solid performers.
Have you contemplated finishing your semester off immediately after the summer, and then starting full-time 6-months early -- this can also be a good option if you want to extend your full-time program, while also vesting your bonus time period.
Yeah, that was my initial thought, but I think I'd rather skip that- I'm planning on volunteering in S.America for 2-3 months and I think it'd be a great experience that I don't know if I'll ever have the chance to do again, if I don't do it now. I'd rather do that than an extra 6 months of work.
However, that's still an option for a few reasons. Do banks often let FT hires start early also?
To find out more about whether extending my internship is possible, would you recommend I wait till I'm interning before asking?
Yes, banks allow people to start early if its mutually viable.
I would wait till your mid-year review to bring it up to your staffer/manager. You can't ask for anything until you perform well.
Thanks for the advice, appreciate it.
Under what circumstances will banks extend internships? Does there have to be a need at the bank or do you think they are open to it at any time if the intern is good?
Generally, a BB will be far more flexible in arranging things for you if you're well liked and a solid contributor. If there are headcount restrictions, then their flexibility to come up with a solution may diminish.
Thanks for the advice, will aim to bring it up during the midterm review or something similar.
Show them that you have the competency level, or potential of operating, as a FT first-year analyst; this is key.
Thanks, that's really good advice and something I'll definitely keep in mind.
I agree, I think it's definitely possible and could get you ahead $$-wise and experience-wise. But don't do it the first day as mentioned. Wait until halfway through at least, and bring it up to the staffer. Just like anything in banking, you'll need to pitch it right. Mention you've gotten ahead in school and want to volunteer abroad, etc. May want to mention the benefit of a lingering intern to them includes the ability to dump grunt work through the Fall (something I definitely missed when the interns left in August)!
This is great, sounds like it's a much more likely possibility than I initially imagined. Will definitely follow the advice in this thread and bring it up around halfway through the internship- thanks for suggesting I bring it up with the staffer, that's something I hadn't thought of yet but would have wondered about when the time comes.
Will mention the benefits of a lingering intern to dump work on haha. Did you say I should mention wanting to volunteer abroad because you think it would sound good? I ask because I just said 'travel' in the OP but my travel plans actually do revolve around a volunteer program abroad.
Yeah, I wouldn't hesitate to mention you are volunteering. It can only help your case. I know we gave a kid a one year deferral on starting his 1st year because he was a stellar SA and said he wanted to do microfinance in some 3rd world country for a year after graduating. I imagine we wouldn't have done that if he said he was going to be traveling instead.
Should I extend my internship? (Originally Posted: 07/13/2012)
Hi All,
A little background: I'm a 2nd semester junior at an Ivy League university and have spent the last 6.5 months interning at a London based boutique investment bank - which is why I'm a 2nd semester junior and not a rising senior. Fortunately the experience has been great - I've gotten to work directly with my VPs and MDs, speak with clients (including CEOs of middle market companies) and even pitch potential investors (long-shot targets). Furthermore, I've represented my managing partner at the board meetings of one of his personal investments. As it currently stands, my contract ends at the end of October.
My end goal is to get an offer from a bb or an elite boutique in NY (I'm a dual US/French citizen and can work in both the US and Europe without getting a Visa) and was hoping to get some input from the WSO community on how to best position myself.
As of right now I've considered the following options:
1) Go home at the end of October - Upside: I'll have 10 months of banking experience - Downside: I'll miss many of the on-campus recruiting events in the fall
2) Shorten my internship and come home at the end of September - Upside: I'll have more time to network - Downside: I won't have much to do besides networking, might miss out on my current projects closing, would also be more expensive because I wouldn't be generating any money
3) Extend my internship further (until next summer or so) - Upside: I would have even more experience and would give myself more time to network - Downside: I'll have 1.5+ years of banking experience and might lose a lot of the motivation to do grunt intern tasks
Thoughts? Will not attending on-campus sessions be a deal breaker or can I get interviews based on the strength of my resume?
Best regards,
Junior Monkey
You are a chimp, not a junior monkey.
Option 1 or 2 imo
Extending Summer Internship Program (Originally Posted: 04/24/2018)
I am doing a 10-week summer investment banking internship program this summer. Would it be possible to ask for an 11-week summer program instead of a 10-week? Or is that bad to ask before the summer begins?
Is it just me, or is this a very strange question?
Don't really have a good idea on how to go about it, but I don't see a good reason why you'd want to do it anyways... Can you give more background?
My program ends early August, but if I sign a sublease for the month of August, that will be a huge waste to the rest of the month because I will be going back to school at the end of the month as well.
