Should I follow up with this alumnus?
Got in touch with an alumnus from my school a few months ago and he was able to help out with getting my resume into his firm's interview pile. Didn't do well during the interview and the firm moved along. Part of me wants to reach out again to get some follow up advice, just about interviewing in general and my next step (now targeting other cities). However, seeing that he vouched for me and things didn't go A+, I'm hesitant to reach back out...
Any advice?
You should reach back out. I would ask him where he thinks you can improve and how he thinks you can better present yourself in future interviews.
Ideally you should have done this soon after the process ended. You don't want to fall of the face of the earth or he may think you just used him to get an interview and when things didn't work out you just moved on.
Agree with the above. He was willing to help you so even if its a follow up to mostly say thank you, I think its worth doing. Better to keep the relationship going so it leaves the door open to connect in the future for whatever reason that might arise.
Makes sense. Had already sent a thank you note, but seems like it's a good idea to go with my gut and follow up again. Thanks for the advice.
I second (or third...) the comment on following up in addition to your thank you note.
Unless this alumni contact did something other than put your resume into the company pile then I wouldn't consider him to have vouched for you (and therefore don't see any reason that you should feel hesitant to reach back out).
