Should I worry about this? idiotic background check company

I am starting in a BB in singapore this june and they are doing background checks using a third party vendor.
I just received a call from the vendor telling me that there's a major discrepancy on my employment. Knowing that I did not lie, I asked them what it is. They said,

"On your resume, you said your job title was 'Computer Consultant III' with the XXX University History IT Department. But your employer said your title was "Student Temp"

I was gonna explain to them how that was "Computer Consultant III" is my internal rank and job position I am hired under and because it's a work study job, the university consider all its student employees as temps and report that way.

They told me they are not interested in explanations. Their job is to report major discrepancies to the bank and this is a major discrepancy because I "inflated" my title. They are going to report me accordingly but just giving me a heads up.

Should I be worried at all for the next few days when HR gets news of this?? Should I expect a call from HR regarding this or is the background check guy just making a big deal out of nothing?

AnthonyD1982:
Just call the companies HR and tell them. It is a normal occurrence.

Should I call up HR myself out of nowhere and make a big deal or should I just wait till HR call me (if they actually do)?

rodneymullen:
I'd hire this third party - they sound very good at what they do.

This is all semantics - if your good at your job now, HR don't give a shit. If you suck, then its a good excuse for them to get rid of you.

You mean they can call the employer and ask for the most basic info? Solid.

Just wait and explain it later They may not really care. I don't think any hr really thinks that you were a full blown consultant at a university job. Logic. Its not like you said you were head of the dept. and were actually the head student temp.

I would be proactive. You wait until they pull your SA and you will be fighting with them. Just email the HR rep and tell them whats going on that way you have a paper trail. You didn't lie, it is just a formality.

A kid a couple weeks earlier lost his offer because HR cannot read and got lucky and managed to have it reinstated. I think it is worth a couple line email.

Call HR at the bank and say that you were notified by their third party vendor that there was a discrepancy in your background check. Explain everything to HR and it should be fine. Also, contact your university and see if they can verify your internal job title and send that to the bank. I wouldn't worry, but you need to take these steps.

"Greed, in all of its forms; greed for life, for money, for love, for knowledge has marked the upward surge of mankind. And greed, you mark my words, will not only save Teldar Paper, but that other malfunctioning corporation called the USA."

Update: I called the school and they said they consider every student a "temp", regardless of position/rank. Because of strict HR policy, they can only verify the official job title and dates on payroll record, which is "temp". Is this going to be a problem?

Temp is a job status, not a job description. You appropriately described what you did during this TEMP position. The background checking company is dense and cannot understand that even though you were permanent hire you still did the job. You might be a temp if you do a SA position, but does that tell someone considering you for a job what you did during that summer?

Call the companies HR and clarify this, preferably through email so you have documented proof.

HR people are not bankers, are not decision makers. They check boxes and make sure you are who you are. People lose their shots for all kinds of dumb mistakes.
