Simultaneously Pursuing ER & AM

It's my understanding that many people spearhead their efforts and pursue both opportunities as they're somewhat related. Often one, or the other ends up being the fall-back in the event that things don't go as planned.

Looking to hear from some folks that went into ER knowing solely that they wanted to work in AM, and vice-versa. How was the journey and what did you do to keep your eye on the prize?

College students need not provide their opinion. Thanks.
