Skipping First Round & Straight to Superday
Hello,
Is it normal/common to be invited directly to a superday at a BB (coming from a non-target for this firm)?
Does it mean anything in terms of the odds of winning an offer going into the superday?
Would they try to grill on technicals more since I skipped the first round?
Thank you
I've had it happen before when coming from a target. For me, it was a bad thing, as they were very skeptical of me and I got grilled on whether I was actually interested in the firm or not. I got the offer, but only after they spent a lot of time deliberating and I had already accepted at another firm.
I see. So they focused on your story a lot?
Not really. More about why I was interested in their firm. This was an EB (BX, Lazard, Moelis LA), so they all knew that I skipped past the first round. Might be different from a BB, where they might not know.
I see. Well it sounds like you did a good job of convincing them. How did you answer those questions?
How would you answer any question of why us?
I'd preferably talk about the people I've talked to at the firm, the firm's strengths, and any detail I can give on why that office/location. Is that how you went about it?
Got invited to a superday without first round. Legit mid-market bank. Is this weird? (Originally Posted: 01/27/2011)
So, I got invited to a superday (IBD, SA) for next Monday at a legit mid-market bank (think Harris Williams or Williams Blair) and I never had to go through first-round interviews. Literally, the first time I spoke to their office on the phone was when some guy from HR called to invite me.
Admittedly, my resume is fairly strong for a non-target kid and I networked with a number of MDs and VPs via email beforehand, but they've still never taken the time to evaluate whether or not I can back-up the claims on my resume.
Should I be suspicious at all? I realize that they're not going to randomly un-invite me or anything like that, but it's still a bit strange, right?
(If I'm just being crazy for asking this then sorry for wasting your time, haha.)
You should raise this to HR and everyone at the Superday then apologize for the special treatment.
Seriously though, be thankful you didn't have to deal with bs'ing your way through bogus fit questions that plague the first round and start preping for the superday.
Not weird --- happened to a kid I know for a bulge bracket after an MD forwarded his resume. good luck!
"I networked with a number of MDs and VPs via email beforehand"
Seem to have answered your own question there. You were probably just more on the ball than the other SA candidates so they thought it was unnecesary. Good luck at Superday!
It happens quite often if someone recommends you (particularly someone more senior). You've got a leg up--great job!
yeah happened to me once too .. emailed generic careers email address. got email back from hr person asking me to call her. called her, and she said to email her my resume and cover letter ....got superday invite after 5 days no networking, no resume forwwarding etc. legit MM bank (BMO capital btw)
just be thankful for ur luck man
just curious, which location? east or west coast and in US? also, was this for just this past SA or FT?
I skipped first rounds after networking.
Just happened to me for a trading firm this past Friday. Congrats -- it means you're a strong candidate!
Awesome, thanks guys.
I imagined it has something to do with my networking, I knew that a few guys had forwarded my resume, I just wanted to see how common this was.
Happened to me for BMO
haha jealous the best that ever happened to me was a superday leading to another superday invite
yeah, i pulled this off once at rbc actually
Not uncommon - congrats. Sometimes a slot opens up because someone dropped out, or they just decide to check out more people last min.
not weird I don't think... especially if you knew someone there and they gave you the nod.
banks often do this for non-target kids who either networked their ways in or had particularly strong resumes. not weird and you should feel good about it.
A superday without first rounds? (Originally Posted: 12/01/2014)
Has anybody ever received a superday invitation without going through first rounds (no referral, no connections)? This is for a BB.
Yes but only for a lateral
yes for accelerated
yes for Goldman Strats.
Yes, for Goldman IBD this year (had a few strong connections, though)...also coming from a non-core
Majority of my superdays were them bringing me straight through.
Yes, very nervous
Yes. Don't know why but everyone on that superday seemed to be under short notice.
Could a superday be a phone interview with bankers or will you always be flown into the office? For a BB
you will be flown out to meet the team before an offer, im not sure ive ever heard of someone getting an offer with just a phone interview
