Slim Shirts
Hey,
So I have what I assume is a common problem. There is way too much excess material around my waist when I tuck in my Brooks Brothers slim fit shirt. So I went out and bought the extra slim fit. However it seemed like the only difference was that the shoulders were tighter, which was not the problem at all. (and the shirt cost more). So now my shoulders are too tight and there is too much material around my waist. Should I just have a tailor like blank label or modern tailor make me a shirt? Or will I probably still have the same problem? Would Charles Tyrwhitt extra slim be a better alternative?
Thanks
I had the same problem with BB shirts. Just take them to a tailor and have them make the waist slimmer for you. Unfortunately ur screwed with the shoulders.
Not sure how Charles Tyrwhitt would compare since I haven't worn them but you could also try Express extra slim fit...no problems with the waist but the rest of the shirt is slimmer too. I like them, though.
I actually agree, Express slim fit shirts fit real well. But it in the end its Express and the quality sucks.
BB extra slim shirts get a little tight in the arms/shoulders for me and wide on the waist as well, it happens if you workout and have any sort of V taper. I've actually started buying cheaper shirts that are on sale that fit my neck, shoulders and arms and then bring them to a tailor to fix the waist. Still winds up cheaper then a BB extra slim fit wso/">shirt.
TM Lewin shirts also fir me the best on the waist, never tried Charles Tyrwhitt
Chaps suit with a shirt/tie combo all bought from Kohls for my first internship.
I actually really liked that suit, fit great.
other side of the coin: drink a lot of beer, indulge thoroughly over the next few months, and fill out the waist line
Can anyone here recommend a tailor for downtown NYC?
Beat me to itCan't think of one specifically but perhaps look up Chinatown tailors on Yelp...good values.
I have had literally this same issue. Started out buying a handful of Extra Slim Fit during undergrad for interviews, got a dozen+, continued exercising, far too tight in the shoulders now but still far too much material at the waist. It pillows at the waist. Just went into Brooks Brothers the other day and tried on a Slim Fit. Much better, and as the manager explained it, the shoulder measurement is more generous even though the chest measurement is the same. Unfortunately, the waist measurement is larger as well, so my plan is to wait until the Semi-Annual Sale this June, cop a dozen, take them to the tailor to put darts in, and have a properly fitting shirt.
Most shirt are made with extra material in the waist area... also, the sleeves tend to be wide where they connect with the torso and cuffs are too big for most men's wrists... Manufacturers do this so that their standard sizes fit (fit over?) the widest number of body types.
Get a shirt that fits your shoulders and get a tailor to adjust the waist and get rid of the extra material.
Yeah I guess I will just have them tailored. Thanks for the input
BB shirts are for old men, that's baby boomer gear
find something with a little more style
I had the same problem, nothing a good tailor won't fix. You paid a lot for the shirt, it's well worth the cost to make it fit right.
Thomas Pink's slim fit shirts are the most comfortable shirts I've worn - I have a couple super slim fit, but they're a bit tight around the shoulder / chest area like your BB shirts. I would recommend the TP regular slim fit, then get the sleeves tailored a bit and you should be good to go. You don't need to get custom shirts to look halfway presentable.
Go to dry cleaners n have them taper the body or put darts in. Simple as that. like $15 to $20 alteration.
This is the answer.
I am at my desk right now wearing a shirt that was once way too big on me (nice shirt but bought it a long time ago when I didn't realize how clothes were actually supposed to fit). I took it to a tailor, and for $25 he took in the body and sleeves so it now fits and looks significantly better.
I have a feeling it wouldn't be worth the money to alter the neck or shoulders (and maybe sleeve length) but if you're talking about too much room in the body, fixing that would be fairly routine work for any tailor.
CT tailored fit , I wear them, never had this issue
CT. Excellent fit. Wait for a sale.
http://www.epicshirtmakers.com/
They make a really great product. I highly recommend them.
Hit the gym. Hard.
Charvet.. or anything made for the European market. Most brands typically sell "generous" sizes here in the states because.. well.. we need it,
Same exact problem. I think the extra slim fits are made for men that are built like women. Anyway, used BB slim fits for a while then upgraded to a shirt maker last year. PM me if you want the info.
make the trip out to HK to get bespoke. british methods, chinese prices, you cannot beat that.
To the OP, this has been a big problem for me for a while now. I'm a size 36 with a 29" waist...I basically have to get a tailor to put darts into all my shirts, and not just the 2 in the back either. A lot of my shirts have the 2 darts in the back in addition to 2 in the front. I just bought an Yves Saint Laurent dress shirt from their MyHabit sale and it's a size 38 EU. I'm most likely gonna have to get it altered as well. Really a tailor is the only option since shirts that are sold off-the-rack can't possibly fit people with such slender builds.
Also an acceptable solution, but more difficult if you can't travel to the East. HK-based tailors travel to major cities in the U.S. (mine is coming in the next month or so), so you could always link up with one of them. The shirts will be more expensive than your average Brooks Brothers shirt, but they will fit really well.
also kudos to OP for having good taste in TV, haha
Dude, you're a freshman intern at an asset management firm. Calm down with the brooks brothers and tailored crap.
I wore Walmart shit for my sophomore summer analyst stint and no one gave a shit.
haha, you also wore earrings to interviews... total clown jockey
Same thing with the BB for me. takin it to the tailor
Will Hunting - kid's just trying to look fresh, cant really fault him for that. Walmart may have been good enough for you but not the same for everybody. No disrespect
To Will Hunting: I know it sounds obnoxious. I got the job in a crappy suit and a club room shirt and tie. Got there and the other interns were dressed surprisingly nice. (One or two kids are from real money and would talk shit about the new gucci loafers they just picked up.) So I figured now that I have the money, may as well spruce up the wardrobe.
thanks to everyone for the tips
Theory shirts have an awesome fit. BB and CT arent the only brands out there that make decent quality shirts you know...
If your drop from chest to waist is 10+ inches, you are going to need a tailor. Likely too, you are like me and extra slim fits shirts for my neck size are too small in the chest only. Nothing looks better than having them taken in to your size, it is worth the extra dough. Just make sure the tailor takes in the arms as well.
And for the last time, no Kohl's, no Men's Warehouse. Analysts don't need to be wearing Brioni, but come on have some self respect.
Bang.
80% of analysts can get away with wearing stuff from Macy's. 95% of associates can get away with the cheapest US-made or Italian-made brand of clothing (Joseph Abboud, Tasso-Elba, Hart-Marx if you can fill a wider build)
aint no way prop joe's fat ass fit into slim anything let alone a shirt
whatwhatwhat: Hahaha trying to look like motha fucking Pat Riley
Was at Macy's today and took a look at Calvin Klein...they've got a line called Extreme Slim Fit. I'm an athletic build where my waist is smaller than average for my neck and shoulder size, and they seemed to fit pretty well (from the one I tried on). Anyone else try these?
They are garbage quality though. Plus they don't fit if you're muscular with a slender waist, only if you're rail thin all around.
Slim Shirts Besides CT and TM Lewin (Originally Posted: 05/05/2015)
Could someone recommend any other brands other than CT and TM that have quality slim shirts?
Would appreciate the input.
barba napoli, finamore, truzzi
Interested in this as well. I've been wanting to try out Kamakura Shirts, but haven't had a chance yet
I love Kamakura. Great fabric, enough fits to cover most body sizes/types, and their staff is incredibly helpful and friendly. Definitely give them a shot if you haven't already.
Thomas Pink. They're a more upscale Charles Tyrwhitt.
Edit: Also, doesn't Brooks Brothers have a slimfit line now?
Yep, I believe it is called the Regent fit. I have broad shoulders and a pretty slim mid section, so their slim fit isnt too tight up top and not that baggy around the waist. Their extra slim (Milano) are too tight, at least for my body type.
Shirts slimmer than CT shirts? (Originally Posted: 12/07/2013)
They are slim, but certainly not as slim as I'd like. Any better/slimmer alternatives? I have some Hugo Boss, which is great. But they are a bit more expensive.
Have you tried the extra slim from CT? I use them and they fit perfectly...any tighter and it would start to become unprofessional.
I wear Extra Slim from CT, but Ive also found BB Extra slim to be slimmer in the sleeves, but their extra slim collection isnt as extensive as CT
CT has a pretty nice extra slim collection. Big fan.
CT Extra Slim + Tailored.
Anyone ever try http://www.5thandlamar.com? for slim fit shirts? Curious to get an idea what to expect.
I own one of their shirts and it's definitely slimmer than BB Extra Slim, but not too much so. Fabrics and construction are nothing special, but alright for the price. I think it's worth ordering one out to see how it works our for you.
My favorite shirts are from Ratio Clothing. They make made-to-order shirts but don't require 50 measurements that you'll inevitably fuck up somehow. Great quality and they fit very well (I usually ask for an inch or two off of the waist in the special instructions section). They're on the pricy side though, so you might want to wait for a sale.
I bough 2 shirts from 5th and Lamar. They fit really well and there's no excess fabric around the waist. However the are constructed pretty poorly. The stitching on one of the buttons came off 1 day after wearing it and I had it replaced. After 2 months I'd say they're getting pretty worn out.
I get my dress shirts tailored after I buy them because I'm so skinny.
At some point, just paint a shirt on your chest.
this
Just take all your existing shirts and put them in the dryer for a few hours at maximum heat setting. Eventually they will become quite slim.
