Sophomore with no real or related work experience

I'm a sophomore international student at a non-Ivy target (or semi-target, I've seen it described as both target and semi-target) school. My ultimate career goal is to go into ibanking but I do not have related work experience, so for now I am applying for every finance related internship I can find on my school's career website. My career goal for the nearer future is to secure a BB summer internship the Summer after my junior year (Summer 2014). But now I'm really just looking for a finance internship in the fall semester as my work experience is negligible. This is the best I can do with what I have. Please have at it.

I'm also a girl, but my name isn't an obviously girl name and the only thing that indicates my gender is the Undergraduate Women in Business club under activities. Should I note that?

You should try to get a wealth management internship first. It is not too late to try that. You should try to work during the semester at a PWM shop right now such as BAML, UBS, MS Smith Barney. Then in your next semester in spring try to find work at a boutique ibank. don't know where your located....but if its like major cities SF, Chicago, NY then there are tons of boutiques that people work for. Its good that you worked at KEB as an intern. Will be great way to break in to some sort of finance internship.

Also, if you work at PE shops during the semester, I think those internships help also.

In terms of your resume best to beef up on your school activities and write more about what you did there.... Your resume has too much white space... Also do not list what you did. Write what your actions resulted in.

Ex. "Filed banking documents" -> "Effectively organized 1,000+ transaction documents for high profile clients in a new filing system created by myself"?

Just don't list an action. Hope all goes well.

I've also heard you should not put trading on your resume as an activity until you are pretty experienced in it and answer most questions about trading. Is this false? I do have an "virtual investing game" account, but that's about it.

do NOT put anything related to trading if thats your only experience, they might ask you about it. PWM = total bullshit internship but it definitely helps on the resume. they are very easy to get and if you push hard enough you might be able to "create" one for yourself. however, its pretty late now. call around, also if you have anyone with previous experience at these banks they can put in a word for you.

don't worry about the interview if you even have one, they know you know nothing so mine was just asking what times I could come in pretty much.

Taking a money management internship is a common first step, however I believe it is overrated - you learn nothing of value, and it's typically unpaid. With a bit of effort, you stand a decent shot of pinning down a no-name IB internship, or at least real Asset Management. Certainly pursue the Merrill Lynch, UBS, and MSSBs' of the world, since you absolutely do need a finance name on your resume, that said I would shoot for something a little more worthwhile if you can.

I'm looking at job postings and there are several postings made not too long ago, but most are for juniors and seniors--should I apply anyway?

Sure - why not? I know a guy who did a freshman year IB internship this way. As you can imagine, he went on to place extremely well.
