Spring Intern Living in NYC
Hi everyone,
I'm going to be doing an internship in the spring in NYC around Midtown, and I've been having an extremely tough time trying to find a room/apartment. I've never set foot in NYC before, so I have no idea how to navigate it. I would've just applied to stay at SVA or some other university dorm, but they only open those up in the summer.
I'm only getting paid $250 a week (it's a boutique IB firm), so I'm thinking anything less than $1400 would work. Does anyone have any suggestions and/or are looking to sublease?
Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.
Craigslist --> Sublet
I heard some pretty bad things about craigslist regarding room leases and such though...
Was in a 1 month sublet trying to find an apartment before my job start and now have my apartment and both were found through Craigslist. And I could not be happier with both the places, my apartment is incredible and the sublet was perfect. Use your common sense and it shouldn't be a problem.
The less notice you give a building and the shorter the stay, the more money you'll have to pay. In that sense, an apt that would cost $1400 for the year would cost $2000 for a couple months.
Bottom line, you'll be way out in Brooklyn for only $1400 a month.
Astoria/LI City in Queens could be good ideas. I doubt you'll work traditional IBD hours at $250/week anyways. Full year would probably run between 1000-1250, so you might be able to find a short-term place around there under your budget. I found my current place on Craiglist and it has been great so far.
Thanks for all the input guys (and/or gals). Has anyone stayed at International Student Center before?
You'll have to start looking at Craigslist about 2-4 weeks before you actually start. You could swing $1300 a month for a place in midtown. I stayed at a relatively decent place on 34th and 6th during a spring internship (it was a 1bedroom converted to 2).
