SSE vs Warwick - Ranking or prestige?
Which is better for a MS in Finance, SSE or Warwick? I am looking to get into a hedge fund as an equity analst.
Which is more prestigious?
Rank these schools (and why do you think so?)
- Stockholm School of Economics (well known in Scandinavia but doesn't seem prestigious as the Swedes think at an international level.... also the program is 2 years and not like traditional master's programs that last only a year)
- Copenhagen Business School (i went there for 1 semester and the campus is amazing but the professors sucked. im guessing stockholm school is better than cbs)
- Warwick (seems like it has good alumni support but not prestigious)
- Cass (good alum support)
- Edinburgh
- BU
- BC
It seems though that Warwick and Cass are particularly strong for hedge fund careers?
SSE all the way, not even close (at least in my opinion). Their placement in London is phenomenal probably one of the best from continental Europe.
they have an alumni base at all major BBs, HF and PE firms in the city and send people everywhere. Plus the two years give you a good shot at a strong internship between the two years. Dont have any personal contacts that made it into a hedge fund as an equity analyst though.
I would go to SSE no doubt, only factors speaking for Warwick and Cass are the facts that they are in the UK, but overall recruitment from SSE is stronger than those.
As a undergraduate program, Warwick Business School is ranked nr 1 in the UK, and SSE nr 1 in Sweden. However, taking everything in account, I would recommend SSE due to its brilliant location. However, Warwick might have a better connection too the banking industry (half of the bankers in London went to warwick, and are getting more and more everyyear). hence, hard Choice! =)
you shouldn't underestimate warwick. top8 in UK overall and seems to be sending a lot of kids to the city. that said, it does seem like a very "commercial" university (the next LSE?) rather than "intellectual."
personally i can't stand most swede's i meet. imagine bleeding heart liberals combined with pompus "moral"/"cultural" elites who have serious misconceptions about how the world views them. they honestly think they are superior to places like USA.
I would go along with standard of living (honestly throughout Europe, you cant go wrong i.e. Switzerland, Italy) and health but education, I dont buy.
haha good comment about the swedes, yes the crowd at SSE might not be very diverse. and also yes warwick tends to send a lot of people into finance jobs.
The original poster also mentioned Cass, I am also curious about this. Not to jack the thread but I am an American also considering a Masters from the EU and can't help but think being right in the city would definitely have its advantages. Can anyone with experience with either Cass and/or Warwick throw their two cents please?
Being in London is a huge advantage and means Cass' main competitor is LSE. I would love to brag more about my experience at Cass, but ppl on WSO tend to get annoyed.
PM me and would be glad to answer any questions about Cass
Does SSE even offer a MS Finance? Checked their site couldn't find anything. The allure of cute Swedish girls had me all exited...and now this.
technically its an MSc in Business & Economics with a specialization in Finance

What about Boston U or Boston College?
BC is considered much better than BU but there MSF requires work experience and from what I hear around the board is targeted more toward professionals looking to up their credentials.
I'd say go to SSE as you can do an internship after the first year which willr eally boost your chances of getting a jerb.
SSE all the way. If you're European it's FREE for 2 years which gives you the opportunity to find a summer internship. Probably places better in London than any of the schools you listed. Note that I'm currently applying there and Warwick.
WOW extreme insecurity should have been added to LLcoolJ's post. Personally I think subsidized everything is a terrible way to organize a society.
arguably high school education in sweden beats the high school system in the US by far (obviously not true for some elite private schools).
anyhow go for SSE for the points mentioned above. if you want to break into an HF and have no relevant previous experience you will stand zero chance after a one year Masters. For the SSE program you might at least score something relevant after the first year.
Cass has the London advantage which if you are proactive will help you a lot - possible to work part-time for a HF whilst there, but SSE/Warwick brand is much better I would say. Both schools place extremely well but personally I would go for Warwick. Studying for a 2 years MSc doesn't make any sense.
actually i'm aussie, not american.
and whilst the USA has certainly lost its way and been on the wrong track for a few generations, its still inarguable that it is the greatest country to have ever existed in the history of the world. may sound silly/biased, but i objectively think no other country has contributed as much to the advanced of humanity as the USA. and whilst its been "hip" recently amongst the university students/professors and the unwashed masses to complain about the USA, most of us in the real world acknowledge the great debt the western world has to the US of A.
@el_mono/gbb_19nhs - comparing the PUBLIC school/health/education systems of the USA and sweden is pointless, for a variety of reasons, i.e. demographic, idealogical, etc. but at the end of the day, the best universities, schools and even the best hospitals are in the USA.
@FinNoviceII - i agree about switzerland, but disagree about italy. corruption runs very deep there my friend, and if you are successful in italy its hard to avoid the mafia.
on topic - SSE also has SSE Latvia and SSE Russia subsidiaries, which are basically Soros-funded charity schools rather than elite educational institutions, so there is risk of the SSE brand being diluted in the long term.

Pull your tongue out of their arse.
@ LLcoolJ - While I agree that the education offered by the elite private institutions in the US is excellent, your generalizations about Swedes seem fairly ignorant.
@ OP - Both Warwick and SSE offer very good opportunities and I would take either one over Copenhagen Business School. I cannot speak to the other schools on the list.
I cant believe someone said italy has a high standard of living lol.
I mean I am a strong proponent of some western european countries >>>>>> US in terms of living standards, but italy is a corrupt piece of shit. Russia is more democratic than that place LOL.
May be corrupt but I dont see how that is relevant to standard of living.
To be completely honest, I think CBS is just behind SSE in terms of London placements but with that said I don't think it would make a major difference when applying especially if your a nordic language speaker. If its between SSE and CBS I would seriously consider which city you like better and go from there.
By CBS do you mean Columbia or Cass?
Copenhagen Business School. and it is way behind in London IBD placement. I have talked to people in GS and their word is that SSE's MSc Finance is the one of the very best continental programmes to attend
people going to SSE please join MSc Finance Stockholm School of Economics 2011 Intake on facebook, we can get in touch prior etc.
