S&T interview when IBD is the real interest...
As a non-target, its hard enough to get interviews let alone be picky about what you get. With that said, I am interested in IBD - that is what I want to do. However, I may only get a few cracks at it.
I got a call back for an S&T Summer Analyst interview. I am not that keen on being a trader, but I think I should at least pursue it... I'd be most interested in a structuring role, so maybe I'll inquire about those desks on the interview...
Here's the question though... Am I screwing myself by taking an S&T interview at that firm? Will that preclude me from an IBD interview, or put me at a disadvantage? I think the interview might be advantageous from:
A. Getting more interview experience
B. Pursuing all my opportunities.
Am I wrong in going on this interview, or would you go even if it wasn't your area of choice??
I'd appreciate some input.
hey,
first post, go me, anyway I actually did something similar but the opposite way round, I started off in the corporate finance wing of a bank, as an intern, and am now full time on a trading desk, my advice is go for it - especially if you're from a non-target - both for the experience (you might find u love trading/structuring) and if nothing else I found contacting people in other parts of the bank as an intern got interviews very easily.....
get the name on your resume and apply for FT banking spots...also, who knows? you may wind up really liking trading
take the interview, since interview experience is valuable, and you get to make some contacts in S&T.
Bottom line, you're a 20 year old kid. You have no idea what you want to do, contrary to what you may think.
will taking the interview with S&T preclude me from an ib interview? I have some solid recommendations from internal employees at IBD
Change S&T Interview to IBD? (Originally Posted: 11/13/2015)
Long story short, a family friend referred me to recruiting at a BB with the intent of a referral to IBD. However, I just received an email from HR asking me to set up a time next week for an interview with their S&T division for a summer analyst role.
I'm not opposed to working in S&T; and I understand the significance of the favor, but how likely is it that I can request a change to an IBD first round? I don't want to seem arrogant and/or ungrateful; and I'd also like to avoid reaching out to our family friend as it took a lot of juice on his end (he's in an BO role). However, if that's the only way to get it done, then I'm open to it.
Any advice or thoughts?
I think requesting a change to IBD might reflect slightly badly on you from the perspective of HR and your family friend, but since none of us will know the dynamic of those relationships it's up to you to decide.
Ultimately, if you're really not opposed to S&T, it is just for an SA position..so maybe make the most of the fact you got the interview, especially if you haven't gotten many interviews elsewhere.
